Going to get a shotgun for home defense soon. I won't shoot it that often other than home defense (no place to shoot it w/in ~40 miles).

The 870 is the bread & butter of shotguns, I know people who have ones that are 20 years old and still rocking. But I've heard great things about Mossbergs. I'm not even sure which model would be comparable to the 870 though.

Anybody?

Both are good. Buy for expense and comfort.

yeah, what he said.

I've got a Mossberg 500A and love it...right now however, it's having issues with the safety....it slips down and catches under recoil.

mind you this gun probably has 5000 rounds through it...

I recommend the 500 if you're a southpaw and have no desire for a pistolgrip.

get a 500 with the breach device...just because it's goofy looking...unless you plan on blowing doors off the hinges with powdered lead slugs

I've had my 500 for nearly 14 years.

^ what he said. the mossberg will probably be slightly cheaper new. my dad has the 870 and i just got the 500, both are great guns so it really comes down to personal preference.

just from looking around it seems like the 500 series is slightly more adaptable if you want to have something you can put a bunch of tactical attachments on for "home defense" and swap the barrel and stock for hunting or target use on the weekend. the 870 has a lot of parts out there too but like the gun itself they are a bit more expensive.

james, they make a safety switch repair kit that is really cheap. have you thought about buying one?

I've got one on the way.

I'll be rebuilding it this week and probably getting a few boxes of shells to wring through it if I get a chance. This whole being dark when I get off work nonsense is annoying.

as far as an aftermarket to add stuff to however, the 870 wins hands down.

the 500/590 however is RIGHT behind it.

I might look into getting a set of ghostring sights for my gun.

Ive had an 870 for 10 years now, just a little 20 gauge, but its what i keep in the bedroom, and its had so many rounds through it I wouldnt even want to try to count (I shoot alot of clay pigeons) and my parents bought me the gun used back then.

I had originally wanted a Mossy, but after going and handling one I was a bit disappointed. The 500 felt flimsy, the forend felt loose, and I'm not a fan of the top safety. After handling the 870 I was more convinced that the Remington was the right shotgun for me. I haven't handled any 590s but I hear good things about their quality.

Here's some pics of my Remington 870:

thats odd, my dad has an 870 and my thoughts compared to my 500 are the exact opposite.

1der, i decided to keep my 500 stock and get something more suited to "tactical" mods. the 590a1 DOES have the bayonet lug? i want to find one in parkerized finish and make it fun for me and fun for who/whatever im shooting too.

yeah.

you don't see the A1 as often..it's got a few other differences I can't remember...

I wouldn't mind a marine model in a nickel or hard chrome finish...I likes me some ballin' shotguns.

nickel pump guns are freakin' sweet
