Yeah, so we are starting my swap today, get everything ready to pull the motor (on the hoist, and fully disconnected from the chassis) when one of my friend's says "Hey, did you remove the shifter?"

Oh yeah, and the fruits of our labor today:

Tomorrow we prep the motor and the chassis, Sunday, we make it run.

Shortly after high school, I decided to shorthen the shifter on my 83 Celica. It's somewhat similar in design to the 240sx shift lever. It has the same cylindrical/conical shape the 240sx shifter does. At the base of this, I tried cutting it in two places and rewelding it about an inch shorter. Well turns out watching my dad weld and having a week's experience in an industrial shop class welding module wasn't enough to learn any decent welding techniques. It seemed to hold fine until I got into a stoplight confrontation with a VW bug. I never made it past 2nd gear as I had most of my shift lever come off in my hand. My friend in the passenger seat couldn't stop laughing. I don't know what was worse. Losing to the Bug or having the shifter break off. But I had the shortest shifter ever. Literally 1 inch throws. It was a long drive home.

That rocks. We pulled off the shifter with a set of channel-locks and it ripped off the leather. Kind of funny, but there is a shift pattern molded into the plastic shifter underneath!
