I'm wanting to get a short throw for my car (91 hatch, Ka24de). I've all kinds of good things about B&M, and i've heard bad things. Does anyone have any idea what the best shifter would be. I'd like to stay away from the B&M if i can (due to the rattling above 5 grand), but if it's going to be the best, then whats a little vibration...

B&M should be the very best one you can get, next to that i would think woiuld be the C's, then nismo (which ive heard feels too close to stock) and then obx.

B&M... there is no replacement, its simply the best and worth every penny

I got mine for 179 shipped from Injected performance (nico sponsor)

yes it buzzes about 5k... but I'm not in the 5k range unless im on the track... so I dont mind, plus its a resonation noise, so it accually fairly accurate... I always know when I hit 5k

the shifter is firm and SHORT due to the springs and it almost does the shifting for you around 3k rpm if you put the clutch in.

C's, Pilot, Megan... nothing is similar, took about an hr and a half to install... just b/c two of the bolts are a pain up on top of the transmission, just lower the transmition bolts a bit and it isnt that bad.

if you want a SS get a B&M, you won't regret it

In terms of appearance, I love the Hurst shifter. It's also supposed to be a quality unit, but they don't make it for the 240SX.

For those who don't know Hurst shifters are well known in old American Muscle cars, but I have always found the design beautiful.

wow, that's more responce than i expected. I guess that the B&M is the way to go. should i trust the one's on e-bay, or would it be best to go through a store somewhere? definitly not here in town, that guy rips you off....

i got my B&M off ebay. just find someone with lots of feedback...i think there are a few stores on ebay that sell them too.

as far as the rattling, if you have an aluminum shift knob, it starts to buz at lower RPMs...but i still wouldnt trade it for any other SS. i just about shat myself when i first took it for a drive.

click the link in my signature for the post I make when I installed by B&M movies are included.

**update** you can hardly hear the buzzing now, and the rattle at 5k is also not as loud. Possible because when the movies were made, the console was out.

i read in someone's post that the rattling depends on what shift knob you use. he said that he had the nismo rubber knob and the rattling was non-existant. is this correct?

I was wondering about getting a B&m as well, as my motorset came w/o the shifter for some reason. Dunno if it would be more cost effective to get one right now, or source a factory one untill later

id say find out how much the factory one would be, and if its more than probably like $125 id say itd be better just to get the b&m

Yeah the B&M unit is the shiznit. I love the solid feel and the short shifts. My PGT shifter feels so sloppy after driving the 240.

I got my B&M and would never give it back. Its so firm, crisp, clean. The earlier mention about it almost shifting itself into certain gears about 3k, I noticed that too. Its a nify tool to have. I'd reccomend it to anyone.

Oh, and mine doesn't rattle at all. But I never drive in any gear at 5000 rpm for a sustained amount of time, so whats it matter?

check out B&Ms site. They have a very comprehensive walkthrough there. The only thing I can remember to warn u of is that the 2 front screws are a PITA to remove. you have to access them from beneath the car. You may need to get a small hand/finger person/gnome with you.

Hehe Ill put a vote in for the B&M as well, very nice. Mine makes at least some noise at all rpms but in a thirteen year old econo car, almost everything makes some noise...I kinda wanna try a stock shifter again, cause the B&M feel normal to me now.

The forward most 2 bolts are kinda a pita but not to bad...If you angle your body right and stick you feet out the drivers side you can get a wrench on them pretty easy...you just cant turn them that far I can do it reasonably quick now though . Remember you will shred the factory paper gasket, RTV will work for a replacement, but if your put it to far out on the shifter plate it wont seal right, so double check after you put it all together to make sure you actually got the RTV between the two surfaces

I purchased one of those knock off B&M shifters. I paid about $80 w/ shipping. It has worked out well for me, goes into gear very easily, but I bought it about a year ago and that was all I could afford at that time. I have never felt the B&M shifter for a 240, but they are very reputiable(sp). I experienced a lot of rattle from the shifter after 4800K RPMs(also had a weighted Greddy shift knob), but then about 3 months ago I purchased one of the SPL urthene transmission mounts and the shifter doesn't rattle bad until 5800k RPMS, and that transmission mount works awsome- super stiff. But I had the OBX one the for my first Short shifter and I didn't like it at all. Too much play!

I know how to install the b&m short shifter I was just wondering if any one did a write up since i seen some one did a write up on a totaly different type of shifter.Did not want to write up something that has already been done in the forums.I did not destroy the paper seal when i put my jdm short shifter in.Got it off of ebay at a cheap price and I figured it looks just like a b&m short shifter so what it going to hurt if it looks and performs like a b&m short shifter.

There are a few write ups for installing the B&M, I know Ive seen more then one before....Its teally not the type of thing that needs a write up though, 6 bolts takes it off, make sure you have a gasket of some sort, put B&M in its place and bolt back down...

I recently acquired a B&M and it rocks my socks. The only word to describe it is...solid. Mine doesn't even make much noise if any.

To be honest - the throw on a stock 240 isn't extremely fun, but not very cumbersome. I've tried SS's in other cars and didn't like the effects, the shifts are WAY too close for my personal preference.

Is there anything someone would suggest for maybe a medium adjustment in the length of throw?

Id say if that"s the only thing that throws you off on the B&M go ahead and get it anyways...after you use it for like a week you almost take it for granted, and it goes back to feeling normal and natural. I honestly forget I even have it sometimes, but I bet if I tried a stock shifter again it would feel pretty strange...
