I put in the B & M short shifter in my 96 240sx. The short throws were amazing, but at lower rpm's there is a loud rattle and vibration. The noise occurs at around 2000rpm, while in neutral or in gear, and stops at 3,500 rpm and then comes back at 4000 rpms. I checked all the bolts and they were snug and the shifter wasn't loose. At first I thought it was the actual shifter making contact with the plate, but once it started occuring in neutral that idea seemed to be incorrect. Any ideas? I searched but didn't find anything....

I'm amazed that you've searched without finding anything.

It's a know problem. Get over it.

The searches I made led me to believe that it either is just a noisy rattle that won't go away, I need a bushing of some sort, or the transmission mount is worn out. I was hoping to get a more definate answer, as the thread mr_wizard gave mentions a bushing but the link in that thread just redirects to the homepage. I tried several strings of words and didn't come up with many good finds, so maybe I'm just dumb.

Make sure you're searching the thread bodies AND topics. Also, make sure you search the archived stuff, too.

hey everyone i don’t know if this has been addressed but i am in the market for a short shifter and am about to purchase the b&m short shifter #45088.but when i contacted B&M they stated they don’t make a short shifter for the 1996 240sx US, ka24de model, and its only for SR and RB setups. So i was hoping to get some feed back from those of you who have installed this is the same setup. in this thread rpd240 is referring to a buzzing sound. why is it buzzing, and is there some way to stop it? Will this shifter work in my car as a direct bolt oem replacement? if not what shifter will?

Answers to these questions would be greatly appreciated thanks you.

the one for the sr will work with the ka24de. it vibrates which is why it makes noise. try wrapping the lower part of the shifter (the part that pokes out from the transmission but not outside of the actual shift boot) with something that absorbs noise.

its a flaw in the design. b&m has a newer version out now that has a lot less vibration(rattle). other than that you can try to track down a C's shifter, hard to find and can be $$ but worth it.

eBay.Look for Mookeh 2 short shifter. Shipped for $60. That is what I replaced my B&M with. Bought a brand new shifter bushing from Nissan, (little plastic thing on the end) and a new gasket. Shifts nice and crisp with no rattling or vibration. Make sure its a SS that replaces the entire mounting base though.

First of I want to thank all of you for your impute on this subject. I went ahead and purchased a B&M 45088 short shifter strait from the manufacture and installed it today it took me about 2 hours, giving that I have never worked on a car before now. It was really difficult reaching my hands around the top of the trany from the bottom of the car for those 2 front bolts , but other than that it was very strait forward and simple. I had no need to lower the trany for room as well like many advised me to do( appreciate the feedback though thanks). And for those of you who are also interested in this short shifter I think the buzzing noise most ppl refer to really depends on the vehicle. I am very happy to say that there is no buzzing taking place in my car at any low or high rpm. Also I would like to say I would highly recommend this short shifter to anyone, the feel of it is simply amazing no words could describe how much I truly love the way it shifts. Hopefully this will help some of you out there with the same questions.

Again, to all who added me with your feedback. Thank you.
