I'm too much of a cheap bastard to shell out $200 for a B&M or a stillen short shifter. So..... this I what I propose I'm going to do. I want to go and pull out the shift lever out of a 240sx and chop it and weld it back together. It shouldn't be that difficult. And if it works and I see any improvements I'll see how many I can find and make them for you guys. Anybody have any imput, disagreements, comments, threats?

I got's an SR240 also, that is why I wanted to try this. Although... would it be possible to just go to a junkyard and grab a shift-lever from a junked 240? Would it drop into the box?

sorry if i dont know shi*t but thought short shifters had a larger ball (dont know name of it) then a stock shifter creating it so that the shifter flows into the gears with no hassle and less of a distance to lock into a gear... just what ive heard so not positive on any of this for i have not upgraded my shifter yet.

If only I could compare the two. I would really like to be able to make a cheap alternative for a short shifter for this community....

you would just have a shorter shifter, not a short throw shifter. I have done what you are talking about before, it is an improvment but not super quick and precice like a good short shifter

YES.

Any shifter on the 240sx RWD engines (KA, SR20, CA18 and RB20/25...not sure about the RB26 since it is 6spd) is compatible. I had a KA with a short shifter and before I sold it, I tested it on ym RB20 transmission and it slides right in and works.

If you actually want your shifter to be lower, go ahead and cut it. Personally, I kind of like the height of the OE shifter. A real short shifter will retain a near-stock height but have a much shorter throw.

Cutting the shifter will result in a shorter throw but the shifter will sit lower. If that's what you want, go for it. The only thing you will be missing is the quality "feel" that people talk about with a really good short throw shifter.

I want to try to actually make it have a shorter throw. I don't mean just cutting the shift lever and welding it back together. I actually mean like designing something.... by the way, does anyone have any websites that show the ins and outs of the 240sx? Like a online BGB?

I had another idea. During my summer internship I was sent to a hardware store for screws. There they had a product that was some sort of epoxy clay. You put it in the shape you want and it cures like a rock. So I was going to just hack saw the stick and mold the putty over the sawed off shifter. Try to get it nice and smooth. Probably won't look right, but I don't have a welding set.

email me..... we should talk......

That sounds good..... but. I'd be afraid of it breaking. If you weld it then you can always just sand it down or file it

I believe what you are refering to is JB Weld.

I DON'T think that is it. But maybe. I might be going back there to get some high strength glue. Going to make a set of steering wheel stereo buttons for my Civic. I swear one of these days that thing is going to turn into frankenstein when I am done experimenting on it and testing my 'ideas' on the poor hapless thing.

When do I get my 240? (answer, when I get a job and stop the 'bum student' approach to college)Mark

I believe I have a pilot motorsports shifter on my car that was installed before I bought my car. Does anyone know if they are supposed to be quality. I cant tell if it is my transmission or the shifter kit but it feels like crap. In neutral there is at least one inch of play on either side before you hit the normal feeling springs. When it is in gear I can also move the shifter about 1-2 inches. I am thinking of installing a stock shifter just to see how it feels.
