This may seem like a dumb question but it is something a friend pointed out to me about putting a short shifter in my car... she said something about stopping pins so you don't ruin your syncros, etc. I was just curious, I wanted to get this B&M shifter(I've been told despite it saying for SR20, it is for the stock transmission)http://www.bmracing.com/index....d=175I was just curious what the experience has been like for others with this shifter, etc or if there are any better recommendations. As for the syncro thing, anyone heard similar claims? Anything I should do while I replace the shifter? any sort of gaskets, bushings etc?

Pins? I have no idea what she is talking about. But that is a really nice shifter, arguably the best one you can get for the 240sx. If i was going to get a short shifter, thats the one that i would get.

You could change your gear oil while you have your shifter out, but as far as i know there is no gasket for the shifter plate.

Okay, there is a gasket on the shifter plate, ive never had to take mine off.

So I guess get the shifter, the gasket, some gear oil, and the rubber boot that covers the shifter hole, because its likely that yours is torn.

BRM comes with a new lower boot, and the one above that should be ok still...You can just use RTV for the gasket...

What pins your friend is talking about are positive shift stops for the gear selector. Some short throw shifter come with an adjustable bolt with at lock nut that stops you from shifting past the gear. That isn't the best way to explain it. Sometimes when you shift, especially when you are racing, you will pull/push the shifter further than needed. This is bad for the internal linkage. So the adjustable bolt/s on the shifter will stop the gear selector from moving too far. I have seen these on Hurst and Pro 5.0 shifters, but some transmissions come with internal stops. I put an B&M on my 86 Camaro, and it did not come with the adjustable stops becuase my trans had them internally. I don't know about the 240 trans, but I haven't seen a short throw yet that comes with one.

awesome, thanks everyone for your feedback! I'm definitely sold on B&M, tho i was pretty much so beforehand, just wanted some advice ahead of time! I take it no one has had any transmission problems over the long haul w/ the B&M?

I never heard any complaints directly link to it...my second synchro kinda sucks now, but that is a some what common problem, and only really an issue when cold...(not event then so much)

I've got one on both my '92 240sx fastback and one on my '93 240sx fastback. I've never had any problems out of my '93 240sx, but my '92 240sx almost all my synchros are out. I think the only one that doesent grind is 5 gear. But I would have to agree with everyone here in saying that the B&M shifters are great.
