Well i was gonna order a ss from underground but as it turned out my bro already bought an ss and a strutbar for me as a confirmation gift (ebay seller). He had it mailed to my house. I got the ss today and i assembled it. I followed the instructions from the 240sx.org faq on the install of a pilot ss which was very helpful. I have 2 questions. 1) Is the shifter suppose to be fastened? bc if it is i can pull out the shifter. 2) Did you guys feel an actual difference bc the shift length feels about the same to me. I bet if i screwed on the stock knob i wouldnt know the difference. The car is drivable, i can shift and all but i dont feel a better shift throw and i think the pulling out shifter thing might be kinda dangerous.

while in 3rd

In neutral

me grabbing it while its still in place

Me pulling it out of socket in air

thnx guys~ mike :)

if u mean the C ring, this is an excerpt from the 240sx.org faq:

" 4)Remove the C_RING(#12) using any tools you deem necessary--(the c-ring will not be re-installed---this doesn't mean destroy it trying to remove it!) ."

the snap ring is what they're talking about. in the OEM shifter, the C ring is used to keep the shifter within the plate.

We can't see exactly how the installation went with the trim pieces in the way. Take some pictures with the trim boot, dust boot, and transmission dust boot removed.

yea but it says :

11)SNAP RING: the round snap ring with 2 holes on it. It is removed with snap ring pliers--or a good set of needle nose pliers. When it is removed, the OEM shifter assembly will come out **(note: this will not be re-installed)**

12)C-RING: The 2nd retaining ring. This one does not have the 2 holes. It is trickier to remove. When this is removed, the oem BUSH SOCKET (SEE #13) can be removed. (**note: this will not be re-installed**).

neither the snap ring or the C ring are being reused so what did i do wrong?!

ill try to get pics tommorow, its kinda dark now

edit: this is Exactly whatt i got, very similar to undergrounds.

Hey! That install is for the pilot motorsports shifter.

Do you have a pilot motorsports shifter? NO!

So dont try to install one that way!It works better if you dont follow other product's instructions. :D

(I dont mean to be mean, but it's right in front of you...)

Those two curved peices bolt around the blue peice

it's a POS and i dont like it.. it was a pain in the arse, I got the OBX shifter.. which is EXACTLY the same as that.

But basicallythe blue part sits on topand then the 2 semish circle metal halves go underneath it around a ring in the transmission itself (you'll see it.. I think..) and then bolt together

If you can pull the shifter out, you're missing a c ring. put it back in, regardless of whatever that FAQ says or anyone else says. The C Ring is what holds the shifter in place.

2nd picture is the correct neutral position.

you're not the first one to install it backwards.

I don't remember using the C ring on my shifter..

The plastic ring in the plastic bag is what holds it down... it should go over the top of the shifter and then below the blue metal peice, so that when its bolted down it holds it in place...

wait does that blue piece and the half circle metal things bolt onto an s13? I assumed they were for an s14 when there was no apparent way to install them on my car. I got the one from underground and i love it so far. It stiffened up my transmission. I also measured the throw before and after install. It went for around 5.5" from 1st-2nd to around 4.0" from 1st-2nd.

thanks fuzion, that drawing is why you are the nico graphics masta!! But my shifter apparently didnt come with that plastic thing. but neither did it come with bolts or a dust boot. So can i still use the C ring to hold it down w/o that plastic round thing?

And this is why I bought B&M. You remove the old one and bolt the new one in. And I think the B&M reduced the throw a lot more than what you're saying the Pilot one did, but not positive on that.

driftin-- Should be the same on the S14 (mebbe?), but there is a small lip/circle that the blue peice sits on and the half circle peices tighten up to..

s13guy--

Maybe someone bought a B&M that used to have the OBX shifter.. perhaps you can buy their little plastic ring from them? Or see if you can find one from a hardware store that is the right size for it.. not sure what to do.

Mine came with everthing but the boot (used stock one.. just tie wrap it back around the shifter), I broke my little nylon bushing thing at the very end of the shifter.. and the knob didnt fit (ITS SUPER GLUED ON. OMFG IM GHETTO)

Could also have ur bro send it back.. it's missing too much to be safe/useful.. would hate to do a shift and have it come out.. I don't know if the C-Ring will work.. it's worth a shot I guess! B&M has a good throw reduction, and I think the shifter itself is shorter.. which is what I want.. but it's $200 :(

to clear up the whole plastic ring problem. Make one small cut on the plastic ring on the stock shifter. Becarefull not to crack it totally apart but it is pretty strong. Then you should be able to squeze it off the stock shifter and put it on yours. Thats what i did with mine and it worked fine.here is a link to pics of the specific install for your shifter. It shows him squezing off the plastic ring after is was cut on one side.http://home.comcast.net/~machi...l.htm
