to start off, megan racing v1 short shifter kit

so the dust boot that is attached to the transmission is removed for the short shifter installation. the boot has a circular bottom, and held on by a zip-tie, i think (or WAS held on). with the v1 shifter installed, that big square plate sits right where the boot used to go.

should i just try to stretch the original boot over this bracket? i checked it out, and it'd be a lot of stretching, if it doesn't rip first. the kit came with no info, and i actually had a few people here on NICO help explain what i did wrong when installing it. i looked at a lot of the other v1 instal threads on here, but i couldn't find THIS part...what do i do with the rubber dust boot? transmission fluid is, every now and then, "spilling" out of the shifter hole.

is this a completely seperate issue, or the result of the lack of a dust boot?

what did you guys do?

thank you thank you thank you

Just pulled one of those off a car I'm working on. Or similar style at least.

2 things... the rubber boot... wasn't attached... was just flopping around... little fluid in the shifter tunnel (how much belongs in there?).

and the other is when I removed it, those curved pieces with the nuts on them were upside down compared to yours, unsure if it makes a difference or not.

Gluck.

the dust boot isnt going to make any difference when it comes to the fluid leaking, the fluid should stay in the housing and not overflow into the bottom of the shifter....not really sure waht to tell you but if it doesnt f eel right then i propably wouldnt take the chance at trying to stretch the boot etc.

that's what i was thinking! i checked and checked and checked, cleaned, wiped, dried.. the only place that i can find that's allowing fluid to escape is at the shifter.prior to the short shifter instal, there were no leaks. i changed the clutch roughly 3000km before putting the new shifter in, so i had to drain the transmission and re-fill it afterwards; the transmission was level, and i put only enough until it started to drip out of the fill hole.

i have a really steep driveway, and i have to go at a pretty narly angle to get up onto it.. still, i don't know if that much angle is enough for the fluid to build-up at the shifter, but it only seems to leak here at home. on a polished concrete floor, i can see a drop every 15 seconds or so come out after i park the car. any other parking lot though (and believe me, even though i look dumb, i'll lay there next to my car for a couple minutes, just staring..), i don't see any drips.

now, i'm not saying there's no other explaination, but this is the best i've got right now. last night, i tried to make a temporary "boot" to use until i figure something out that's a little less.. crappy.. i even tried using a latex glove! hahaha..it ripped. i ended up using a cone-shaped cutting of neoprene, and several zip-ties. neoprene absorbs a little bit, but it's flexible and it's all i had, and tonight, thus far, i haven't seen any more drops of fluid. we'll see what happens.

as far as the dust boot and fluids leaking, i don't know if it's original intent was to just keep things out of the transmission, but if keeps things out, then i'm sure it helps keep things in as well.

what the hell does everyone ELSE do with their dust boot?
