Devalue - v. to show a customer why the car they are considering trading is not worth as much as they believe it to be worth. This is done by what's called a 'silent walkaround.' The salesman will take a slip of paper and walkaround your vehicle pointing out scratches, dents, dings and ask you questions like, "Has this car ever been in a wreck?" or "How long has your check engine light been on?" This serves two purposes; 1. To prepare you for the low appraisal you're about to recieve and 2. To make the new car more desireable.
As rotten as this may sound, just remember, you're on the lot to buy a car. According to statistics, 85% of buyers have it in their mind before they leave the house that they are going to buy a car.
You can take control of this situation by demanding to recieve your appraisal first. Then once you're "haggling" bring up the fact that they gave you too little for your trade and ask them for more. Thus, you've just placed more value in your trade.
