Hello all.... Hopefully I'm putting this in the correct forum. I'm currently car shopping for my wife... Looking for a used car for $8-10K... Might be able to swing 12K but I won't know that for another month or so... I'm looking at mid 90's Q's and I's right now... I like both of them. I've driven a couple of early 90's Q's and really liked those, and one I30t that I was impressed with too, I think that was a 96... I almost bought that one a couple years ago, but they wouldn't come down in price at all so I skipped it... I guess I'm looking for opinions from owners telling me what they like/dislike about them, common problems I should look for when shopping... Things I need to be ready to fix and what not...

BTW a 100K mile Nissan/Infiniti dosen't really bother me (or should it)??? I also do my own wrenching and maintainence, so knowing what I'm getting into ahead of time could be good...

I've owned several Hondas in my time but the more I look the more I realize I can get a Lexus or Infiniti with more goodies in similar shape as I can for say an Accord... We all know that the Lexus and Infiniti is about as reliable as the Honda too, unless I'm misinformed...

BTW, the competition that I'm also eyeing right now are the Lexus ES300 and The older LS400's...

Give me all that you've got guys/gals...

TIA

Heath

For 8-10 k in mid 90's Q's or I's, you can do the following:

-Buy a good conditon 94/95 Q45:Advantage reliable extremely classy, better car, in every way than 90-97 LS400.-Buy a 90-93 Q45 for cheap and use the remaining bucks to bring it into great shape (guides etc, more on this later). Many members here feel ,that there are very few cars ,that can rival a near as new conditon 90-93 Q45 (and none in its price class).-I30's are also an incredilbe value on the market for your price class, you can easily pick up a good conditon 96/97 I30 trouble free, nice.Easy to maintain, as it shares mechanicals with the same generation Maxima ( he ES shares with Camry and the Max is better car to share a chassis with)-for about 10k you can find some 97 Q45's, 98's even (if w/ hi miles).A newer body style than even the 94/96's and has a reputation to be nearly bullet proof.A bit less edgy than the earlier Q and slightly decontented in some ways but still a <very> desirable car

If you want a good NICO Q, go for Z's car...... Thats a real good one......

Id also, in your case, look into a J30..... Just about a step down in most ways (except styling, IMO) from a Q, but still a good care, and slighly more economical.....

If you live around me, Id be MORE than happy to meet up with you and look at cars with you.......

Hi Heath... man that sounds weird :D

I'd spend a good day searching through these forums. You'll find most every common issue here somewhere and you'll get a good idea of what you're up against with different models. For starters I'd plug in "Chain guides" "transmission cooler" "fuel pump" and "sunroof" and see what comes back. The search button should be in the upper right corner of your screen.

Pay particular attention to posts from "Q45Tech" - he's the best resource going for Q45 information.

Avoid any of the 6cyl ES series Lexus unless you can find one with verifiable oil change service records - they slugde up easily and have frequent engine failures.

Happy browsing!

The original,

Heath :D

Heath - I'd concur with the guys here.

I could sell you a used Q, but I'd buy the "silver bullet" ANYDAY, knowing the maintenance history.

Plus, the price is right!

Yeah. Surprisingly, my five year old son was the most upset. Last night, after the new owners pulled away, he wanted me to "go out immediately to the Infiniti dealer and get another Q"!

He is feeling better about it this morning. Asked all kinds of questions comparing the Q45 to the M45 while I was driving him to school. :)

Yup! My son wanted me to keep the Q till he grew up and could have it. This from a five-year old!

We are going to have to keep an eye out for the car keys when he is in his teens. :D

Your welcome Heath.

Our current default setting as that function as as disabled ( but memebrs can enable it).During registration many assume they will get an email when their thread is answred, so I am thinking we might change out default setting to "enable notification".

I thought I'd throw out a vote for a J30. I've only had mine for a few months, but it is a very nice car. I was in Sacramento this weekend and I saw a 95 J30 with 84K for $6K or best offer. I believe I've read that the 95 has a lot of the bugs out of it. Besides, then you'd have a couple grand left over for all the preventive maintenence! :-)

Well I need something with a decent sized back seat, and from what I've read the J30 sucks for back seat room... Other than that I think they're great looking cars...

The back seats of the J are very comfortable but there isn't a huge amount of space. More importantly, unless your wife is comfortable driving a high powered RWD car, FWD may be the way to go. The J can be tricky in snow.

That said for what Js are selling for these days and the luxury you get for that price, they are a great bang for the buck.

I'm wondering if I can get away with getting her a car around 6K and finding myself a used J... Probably get better gas mileage than my Explorer, which is getting taller by the day, those big tires really eat up your gas mileage... I'm down to averaging about 13 now!!!

A J would be a good alternative, but, unfortunately, premium is REQUIRED!!!!!

If you drive anything like me, a Q would give you about the same gas mileage, although I get really good mileage on the highway.......

What should a good running Q get as far as mileage... Combined City/Highway...
