Okay, so I have inherited a fairly large amount of money from my uncle whopassed a little over 2 years ago, I have had the money, but I can only use it for educational purposes, like a computer, car etc., which by the way, I will also use that money to help me out when I get my 240sx. Anyways,I am a student, in high school. Right now, I have really ghetto computer, no speakers, printer, CD-ROM doesnt even open up, and only like 15 GB of memory, and a 15 in. CRT monitor. So, its time I use a little bit of that money, I am in the 900-1600 price range, play video games ocasionally, need over 80 GB of memory, I want a 15 in. LCD screen, 2.66 MHZ processor or higher. I know that a little while ago, there was a thread about a cool website where you could build your own computer, and they had really cool loking cases. Please help, or links would be greatly appreciated. BTW, keyboard and mouse are even more messed up then they already were.

Cyber Power is good if you know what you're doing, or most of the companies you could see advertising in MaxPC, but you need to know your stuff so you get parts that agree well. If you don't know a whole lot, Dell is a good choice (my dad made me get a Dell cause he wanted the warranty and good name, otherwise I would have gone like ibuypower.com or something.

I'd rather get a computer set up for unix out of the box. (ie. windows=CRAP which would be why I didn't recommend a PC)Not that I don't linux (bah it's almost the same) already.

http://www.dell.com If good customer service and onsite-tech support is your thing. Their pricing is excellent in some areas; you just need to be on a lookout for good deals. Just last week I scored a 3.2ghz scsi workstation for $570 after rebates.

good luck

that http://www.refurbdepot.com link is awesome! i need a new desktop, and i've been nudging my relatives to pitch in and get me one for my b-day. that would be the site then! mwahaha.

as for macs, they're awesome. they're meant for art-applications, but they're nice. i really hate windows. i've never seen linux or unix in person. and in the end, building your own is very worthwhile.

p.s. i heard emachines are crap, but i heard from my computer repair guy that the only thing really wrong with them is that the manufacturer puts a weak power supply on them, so they end up blowing them often. but after upgrading it, they're ok.

Actually...yeah thats better IMO than getting a prefabbed system. I'd rather buy all the parts at say a computer show, take them home and piece my new system together.

Buy a mac? WTF? NO! Don't listen to ANY MAC propaganda ever. Windows Based PCs will always be better than trying to find mac software. Besides, PC's are infinitly flexible and upgradeable hardware and software wise. Do you want 99% of stuff to work for your PC or 10% of stuff to work for your mac thats "faster" They never are. 175 bucks on a Pentium 4 2.4ghz 800mhz FSB chip will get you 3-3.5ghz overclocked, very easily. That, dual channel DDR, and the macintosh is totally and completly owned well into next year. Macs are like saying a Honda CRV is a powerful sport utility. Its just not true, unless you go to the park for a picknic and call that sport and utility.

Go to http://www.newegg.com and buy some decent components and assemble them, its really easy. Buy good name brand stuff, make sure you go Intel Pentium 4, and a 2.4ghz 800mhz FSB chip with hyperthreading. (or faster than 2.4ghz if you wanna spend more, but they are essentially the same CPUs with different multipliers) Nothing else will compare. I dont recommend AMD, they are the computer equivelant of FORD. Cheaper, and the reliability shows it. Most everyone i've known has overheating/crashing/chip failures with an Athlon.

for those that say Windows sucks, try using Windows XP, it rocks. Solid as all hell, simple to install new software. MACs are good if you're a desktop publisher or into art. Other than that, can you say BETAMAX!!!!!!!!

I love the new windows XP for most tasks. But it sucks for messing around, coding, or having a lot of fun. I wish Linux had more games though, and i still need to buy a linux compatible network card.

Definitly, Tomshardware is for the learning, Newegg is for the buying. Two sites and you can become a PC power user.
