After installing my new eprom chip I sometimes (not all the time) shoot flames from the muffler, either from shifting gears or right after letting of the throttle, in high rpms. My upgrades consist of a JWT Pop charger, 2.5" turbo back exhaust, boost controller at 14.5 psi and a tuned eprom from. I checked for ecu codes and got 55 back. Any ideas as what I should do? When I tuned my Sr20 a year ago I was shooting flames as well. Is this normal with this car and these basic mods?

having no cats and the fact that the JWT tune is probably on the safe side i would say this is normal. my WRX shoots flames when its really hot outside because the mixture enriches with high ambient temp. but in short yes unless they are like 2 foot flames i think your good.

EDIT: Unless your shooting flames everytime you shift in which case yeah theres a problem.

you have excessive fuel and or lack of spark

have you verified that the car idles on all 6 cylinders? and that chip is tuned for the injectors you have right?

Do you have a vented blow off valve? I know people have told me mine does it, shifting at high rpm with a vented BOV makes it run rich for a second and ignites in the exhaust. Without a cat it just shoots out the exhaust tip.
