Shocks/Springs Problem

My front left shock/spring (not sure which) is making a weird sound when i go to fast around turns or brake hard. im pretty sure its the shock b/c when i put the stiffness up to 4 on the front left it makes the sound a lot more. it almost sounds like it is scraping or letting air out or something. it is not a good sound. it doesnt happen all the time, just when i push their limits and only on that one. i was thinking the spring might not be sitting right? could that be it?
