Hi all,I am getting ready to replace the shocks and struts on (Kilipo's) my car. (1989 240sx).

Any recomendations would be helpful. One mechanic recommends Monroe and will do all four for $500. Another mentioned a japanese brand that is a gas strut. His price is $387 just for the front.

I appreciate your input regarding brands and what is reasonable.

I also need to replace the speedomoter as the needle bounces all over the place. Any recommendations on that?

Thanks,Kilipos' mom

You can use any speedo from an 89 or 90 model and solve your problem.

As for struts, I usually prefer KYB brand shocks. The GR2s are a good buy IMO and last quite a while.

Replacing the shocks and struts have to be the easiest thing ever. Its like, 4 bolts.

Anyways, Do it yourself, don't let some douche bag over charge you for something that takes 20 minutes to do.

I would definitly recommend coilovers. Megans are "Good" some people have problems some people don't. And they're cheap.

If not. Go with KYB Gr-2's. It is a Gas Shock, and you will notice a small drop in the suspension. These are about 200-400. I believe.

Eibach Sportlines (2.1 inch drop in front, 2.5 inch drop in rear) $200 for all 4 springs.

Have someone put the springs on the struts for ya, install, and the car will ride a lot lower, and handle 10 times better!

I have sportlines on stock struts, and i noticed a huge drop when i used only the springs.

Good luck!

stock struts w blow w lowering springs.... just to let u know

kyb are the cheapest route

the adjustables are the better choice, and not much more... shouldnt be hard to do it yourself, u just need someone to change the top mounts to the new struts w the springs (new or factory ones)

A set of KYB GR2s, pretty close fit to a oem strut, can be picked up for under $200 on ebay. I would think a mechanic can install them for a decent price.
