so basically you have to replace the whole strut,cause its one piece. And all four corners are struts because they hold the spring within their own spring perches built into the body, non adjustable. If im not mistaken. Shocks lack the built in perches to hold the springs in place, and so usually the spring that works in conjunction with a shock isnt even surrounding the shock. For instance a pickup truck rear end with leaf springs.
Another way to look at it that I've read is that a strut is considered to be a structural arm of the suspension. IE if you took it out the wheel would not supported in any direction at all. Like the fronts on our 240s. you take out the front strut, no way you're gonna move that car around on its own wheels. The other side of this is that if you remove a shock, the suspension arms in the system will keep relatively good alignment. again, the pickup truck comes to mind.
