So my aunt and uncle in North Carolina have offered to give me a few pieces of really nice furniture. To be exact, a couch, chair w/ ottoman, a coffee table, end table, and a 28" TV..

The obvious choice would be to fly down there, rent a U Haul and drive it back... Its not really that bad of a drive, 10 hours isnt too bad, but if theres a better option that might cost the same amount of money or even cheaper, itd be good to know..

Any ideas/suggestions?

If there's no "urgency", check to see if there's any movers in the area, and get a quote. If they can throw it on an existing load, it might not be too expensive.

Honestly, I'd say make the trip. Plan for like 3 days and go site seeing and enjoy your time!

Are these antiques that have some actual appraised value? If not, you might be better off buying cheaper stuff locally off Craigslist. It will not be cheap to make this trip.

No this is some pretty high end furniture... all italian leather and stuff like that, meaning that even if it costs me $500 to get it, it still is 30x less than it cost new...

Be careful Wes. People might think you're turning into a spoiled Nala!

He went on a cruise around Europe.

From his facebook he is moving to Hartford for college now.

He claims to have "hooked up" with a European chick, but that seems to mean kissing to him...

:chuckle: "Hooking up", as defined by our creepy virgin, was being kissed by a random fat chick against his will on a crowded dance floor. If Nala actually got beyond 1st base with a post pubescent human female, you know he'd be bragging about it here immediately, followed by asking what he should do next.

Thankfully he has not bored...er...sickened....I mean... shared any cruise details with us.

10 hours each way means investing a weekend if you do it yourself. Shouldn't be hard to compare estimates between doing it yourself (rental + gas+ tolls) vs having a professional do it. I've moved furniture both ways. If it isn't that much furniture, and nothing is really heavy (like a piano) I found it more convenient to do it myself, rather than taking time off for appointments at both origin and destination.

I disagree. He'd ask during.

Cheapest option: Call a freight company. Be sure to wrap the furniture to keep dust and grease off it.

The smaller independent carriers tend to be the cheapest, as UPS Freight and Yellow require commercial accounts to get the discounted rates.

I've used it thrice.

With places like this that you and jesda mention, will they have people to move the furniture from the house to the vehicle? Or does that have to be done by the shipper.?

It can be arranged to have them load it.

Altho, I'd arrange for some locals to be on hand to load the stuff. It's worth paying Starving Students or whoever to be there, ready, and waiting.

Or, as was said earlier - Rent a Y'all-Haul. That's how I moved Bex to AZ.

If you use a freight company, you normally go depot to depot. Some companies will pick it up from your house as long as its not in a cul de sac where a freight truck cant get in and out. The prices vary quite dramatically. A 2-ton piece of freight can cost me anywhere from $150 to $600 depot to depot over 200-300 miles depending on who I call.
