i was looking into doing an rb swap and engines alone are quite expensive. http://www.japan-partner.com is where i have found entire cars for sale for a decent price. now here is the question. even if its just used as a parts car does it still need to pass customs?

You are opening one very large can of worms. The fact of the matter is that it is a pita.

You need to let an imorter bring the car in for you. If you bring the car in as a parts car, then it will be nearly imossible to register it later. If by "pass customs" you mean them allow the car in, then they will pretty much let any car in as long as it is not a complete running car. If you want to bring in a car to be a dd then you need to get deregistration paperwork. Check out right hand drive japan dot com

Your really need to search...... Unless the car is 25 years old, no you cant bring it. If you do you runt he risk of it being ceased as soon as the customs agents inspect the contents of the container. If you do by somehow get it through you need to try to title it (apply for a title), only a few states are lax enough to let a 10 digit vin slip through. Then you still have to worry if it will be picked up on.

Please search first, you will see you are wasting your time.

Japan partner does not ship to the US. Sorry might as well just get a motor set and not run the risk of having your car crushed.

Let me know if you end up buying. I have a few friends that work for independent importers and would love new clients!

Yes from what i understand, this is the case. I just registered my S13 through a guy in Cali. It can be done for the right price and if you find the right people.

Head over to the Skyline section.

Should answer most if not all your questions.

im not to worried about the price it just seems to me it would make more since to import a car for parts and completely strip it, sell parts i dont need. make some money back instead of just just buying a front clip

I've heard of people getting the car through. Buying a beater s chassis and swapping vin plates and such. you may be able to do that and I have never had anyone look at a car that I was insuring.
