I went out driving tonight w/ my girlfriend, and a new section of blacktop was shiny. I've noticed this a lot on new blacktop lately. The road was dry, but I could see a reflection of the tail lights on the truck in front of me. Are there any civil engineers or road construction workers who know why it's like that? It seems dangerous, because when winter hits, it'll be harder to spot black ice.

blacktop....I’m confused, are you talking about an SR20DET or asphalt?

He's talking about asphalt as in pavement as in the black stuff you drive on ;)

We have that in our mall parking lot. Would be the PERFECT place to have some fun in, if you know what I mean (with a 240 at least:)) And think of when it rains......oh man, that would be so fun. If only I wouldn't get in trouble for it. I hate the po-po's.

if it was in a parking lot, they probily cheap basturds and insted of putting new asfault down they just "painted" the top of the old asfault, i think its a thin layer of tar or somthing... i know they did it to some parking lots around here, and when it rains its slick as heck.. fun to do 360's and such on :)

I dunno if this is what you saw or not.. but i have seen square bits of glass embedded into the asphault in several new parkinglots. Maybe its a recycling thing?

All I can say is that the parking lot around work was recently sealed. It's not paint as the one guy above said (that is, if we're talking about the same thing), its just some kind of sealant that seeps down into the cracks and crevices and protects the asphalt for winter. It's black, shiny when wet, but dry and flat black with no gloss within 24 hrs once its completely dry.

Too much oil in the asphault mix might cause this poblem. Just a guess.

I agree with cyberkreig. As ironic as it sounds , its probably recycled glass. All our green bottles and bud lights finely chopped up. Look at it closely w/ mag glass in broad daylight.
