I don't think it's rice, it looks good if you don't have a million guages or other stuff cluttering it up.I think a carbon fiber overlay painted the color of the exterior would be good, just to overcoem that smoothness...that's the only problem I see with it. we just aren't used to reeeeeeeeally smooth dashboards.

but it doesn't serve a purpose to make you go faster so insanity inc would classify it as rice lololol

it's spelt shiny

I've thought about covering my dash in fiberglass, not creating one out of fiberglass. It'd be one hell of a job though.. Not quite sure if it'd be worth the countless hours of sanding, dynaglassing, bondo, etc. If anyone has done it though, I'd like to see pics.

I think if your dash looks like a highway map of the US and you have no money to buy one then I think its time to do something drastic!!

with some 'nose to the ground' work a few bucks for supplies and the joy of DIY you can come up with a decent, respectable looking dash.

BTW it is spelled 'spelled' not spelt

i wouldnt advise putting a shiny, brightly colored dash in a vehicle that you will drive often... because the glare from the dash on the windshield would be killer.

if you have a messed up dash... i would suggest just reupholster the one you have, and use fibre glass to fix any damage or to ad places for guages etc... and one of the best fabrics to reupholster your dash with is suede... because it doesnt shine... and race cars use it!

The glare was one of my concerns.

Have any pics of a suede dash?

I was actually looking into a composite dashboard. The hardest part I can see is getting all those nooks and crannies for mounting points and making sure they're strong enough to take the weight of the dash rattling around and stuff like that.

Just because no one has done it before doesn't mean it's necessarily going to cost a fortune. All you need is a sheet of carbon fiber, the resin/hardener, and a lot of prep work. It's not the most simple task in the world, but just because it hasn't been done previously, doesn't mean that it'll cost more than if it had been done before. Basically, it all comes down to whether you want to do it yourself or pay someone to do it for you.

I bought my roll of carbon fiber from an aerospace company that was getting rid of its surplus. Still pretty pricey stuff especially if you don't know what you're doing with all the wasted fiber.

Nothing says performance like ghetto cracked dashes!

While you're probably right about it being all show, there are some people who'd like both, and build their cars accordingly.

I'm rather partial to the suede ones actually. The glare problem would be very real in that hatch

For my purposes, the most exalted, pimptastic suede dash would probably be the best. Glass-like, super-shiny finish? For external application only. I would prefer that my interior didn't blind the living shlt out of me.

1 of mine friends crew members got his car totally wrapped in carbon fiber, he told me he can't tell me where he got it done until it's done but should be done and will try to find out how much to get my dash wrapped soon.

While this indeed is true... i say this in a sarcastic manner for the people who do all show.. and then expect it to be all go on the street and drive around like it too... I mean to each their own preference... but don't over compensate what you have for something else that you don't. And yes the glare i think would kill me trying to drive...

Althought that post does have bright colors and appears to be very show oriented the actual glass work and paint look good. Just not my taste or color choices.

I am finishing up fiberglassing a speaker box and amp rack, and I will NEVER fiberglass anything again. The resin gives you a crazy headache, gotta get the right amount of hardener, it's the messiest mixture I have ever messed with, and when you sand it it gets all in your clothes and you itch for hours!

I just noticed in that picture of the S13 with the fiberglass dash...it's an automatic with a shift knob and boot, lol. And I would never be able to have kick panels like that...after one day my left foot would have been through the speaker.

I'm actually building a fiberglass box for a Polk 8" and when I get back from my trip to PA this wknd, I will be doing the fiberglass wheel well enclosure- with pics of course. The design I made is for two JL 8W7's powered by two bridged 300/2 JL amps. It should hit ridiculously hard. Fiberglass/resin reeks- and it stays smelly for a long time. To me, it's worth it in the end.Did you use 1 1/2oz fiberglass? What stuff did you use?

Go for a full carbon-fiber dash:

This one is from an S4 hill-climb car.

Of course, that kind of shxt is expensive, but making it out of flat sheets like that is less expensive than custom-molding it.

sounds like you only want to hear the suggestions you agree with... so what was the point of your post again :P

go to a junkyard. you will have to search for a dash thats not in a condition thats equal to or less than yours, but if you do it will definitely not cost as much as some ricer-boi fiberglass setup.

if you are uber cheap just get a dash mat.
