I was browsing around freshalloy and I can across a post about a KA-T, and he mentioned something about sticking a washer in the oil system and it raises oil pressure. Then a guy responded and said it was called shimming the oil pump. Do any of you guys have any details about how this accomplished, how/why it works, and the process to add such a feature.

the oil pressure regulator in the oil pump has a spring in it. By shimming the spring with some washers it stiffens it up and raises the pressure. I have never actually tried it and I am not sure if it is a good idea.

I am genuinely curious, not trying to pick a fight. I am on the fence on the shimming thing, a little more pressure would seem to be a good idea to me, why do you say it increases wear?I would think it would put extra strain on the pump but everything else should benefit.

the oil is a film between the bearings and the crank, increasing the pressure would increase it's ability to keep the journals and the bearings from contacting each other.

I want logical discussion and understand the reason behind your veiwpoint that might show an error in mine but you have made it apparent in two different threads that you have many opinions and no facts so have fun in your bubble.

that does not make any sense. The bearings don't wear out because of oil pressure, they wear out because they make contact with the crank. Don't worry about it man, your opinion is no longer needed.

Which bearings inparticular are you talking about Lost_To_A_K-Car? I'm interested in this. I'll probably want some higher oil pressure when building my monster. But I'll admit, I haven't put any research into this whatsoever. It's one of those things I've always taken for granted until now.

main bearings and thrust bearing, which aid the crankshaft.

rod bearings too. I still don't see how a slight increase in oil pressure could be bad. I'm not saying it's impossible but I want to understand why, not just be told "it's this, end of discussion".

why not just get a higher flowing oil pump?
