Heyi have a 1992 240SX SE fastback and lately i have been experiencing some shifting problems, i am finding it hard to shift from 1st to 2nd, it seems like the rms must be at a certain level to make the shift. If someone could please help me out, i'm not very familiar with the car and would appreciate some advice before i get raped at the garage. Thanx.

well, what do you mean it must be at a certain level, like a certain rpm? are you sure you have the transmission filled to the proper level? sure the clutch is releasing all the way? like if you have your car in 1st with the clutch pushed in, can it move if you take your foot off the brake?

If you're not just imagining things and you really do have to "match revs" to get it to shift, then it sounds very much like your clutch is not fully disengaging. Although, if that's the case, it seems odd that you only have trouble going from 1st to 2nd. Do you ever have trouble getting it from neutral to 1st? Check to make sure you're clutch fluid reservoir isn't low. It's about the size of an eight year-old's fist and is under the hood in the extreme left rear corner (driver's side)

only from first to second? that sounds like bad synchros in second. hopefully not though.

yes, it is having problems from neutral to 1st as well.In first goin up, it will make it to about 4500 and give out for the shift, it'll rev down then it has to be jammed into 2nd. it seems like 3rd and 4th are alright.

try changing your transmission fluid to synthetic blend and see if it helps.

its sounding like bad synchros. i know i always have to rev match going into first but i rarely shift to first when driving, usually only use it when going from a dead stop

Are you guys sure we're getting the whole story before you go blaming the transmission? If his engine rpm has anything whatsoever to do with getting it into gear, I must certainly say the clutch is still partially engaged!

possible but it would not be gear specific. i may be jumping awful fast on the trans. easy enough to check for clutch engagement. make sure the prob is nonexistent in other gears. also try double clutching your lower gears.

mine has shifting problems into second sometimes. Though I'm pretty sure it's because the previous owner wasn't that great at driving a manual, and kind of screwed it up. I'll just go to shift into second and it'll grind hard, even if I'm just shifting normally. Never happens in any other gear, and it doesn't happen consistently. It's quite strange.

nissan second gear tends to be the first to go. dont know why that is. just my experience. 350z has triple cone synchros on 2nd.
