Shifting on an automatic?

I'm not sure if this was mentioned in other topics, since I'm a new member, but does shifting on an automatic damage the car in anyway? Like if you're at a light and you want to pass a car, will shifting from 1 to 2 to D damage the engine or transmission? I know the gears are suppose to be used for driving uphill or under difficult conditions, but do they serve another purpose?

Thanks for the help.

No sense in it bro... save your transmission and avoid excessive wear to it by not using those gears other then specified in the owners manual... if you want to be quicker off the line and more power to the wheels do it the right way either a turbo, built engine or torque converter if you have the money or try some simple inexpensive mods like C.A.I. Cat-Back Exhausts they also add a little extra go cheaply on the A.T. they will all give you what it seems your looking for more performance and work with your engine set up better then over working the engine and transmission by unneeded high rpm sprints..

In a sense, yes. Those gears are meant if you are hauling up a hill or mountain and don't want the car to shift into overdrive and lose power.

Yes you can. Drag racers with autos shift thru the gears. No point in the Versa since its a massive box of slush though.

Yeah, drag racers have manual shift autos with little to no computer controls on them and torque converters that are made to handle the constant change of hydraulic pressure. Newer cars have transmissions that have electronically controlled solenoids that prohibit the car from shifting back and forth safely.
