I just bought a 1989 240sx with the 2.4-litre SOHC KA24E engine and Automatic transmission. While driving the car if the rpms go over 5000 then it will not upshift. Has anybody heard of this happening and if so how can I fix it?

I would try changing the speedo sensor. What happens is the when you step on the gas hard the throttle pressure will overcome the governer pressure(relative to speed) and delay the shift then once the speed gets to a certain point the governer pressure will be more then throttle and shift you into second.

Run the codes, a code might be stored without the check engine light being on because that only turns on when the code affects emissions.

Thank you for the info. I will try to replace the speedo sensor sometime in the next couple of weeks and run for codes see if anything pulls up.
