Hello everyone. I am recently got a 92Q45 and have a following question.

When you shifting gears, there is a standard positions like “P”, “N”, “R”,”D” but in additional, my car got a positions “1”, “2”, “3” ? Is it something like a tiptronic? What position is preferred to use? (I use presently use “D”)

Thanks,Viktor

It's an old topic, but why not?

'92 Q transmission starts off in 2nd gear from a stop unless you a) floor it, b) put the selector in "1", or c) replace the transmission controller with either a) JWT unit (~$400) or b) '93 Q45 unit ($200 or less, if you can find one).

JWT unit raises WOT shift points something like 500 rpm, particularly useful if you also invest in the JWT ECU (~$750), which nets you something like 30hp in the top end.

Infiniti built second-gear starts 'cause that's what Benz and BMW did at the time. They saw the light for '93. Electrical system changes too much in '94 to use that TCU.

First-gear starts are likely good for the transmission, spreading the wear around.

How's that for suscinct?

It is a conventional electronically controlled transmission. The 3 or 2 positions prevent it from upshifting from 3 or 2. IE if you leave it in 3, it will start in 2 (as a 90-92 Q does in any position except 1 or at full throttle) and shift up to 3 at the appropriate speed, and back to 2 when needed. This is good for in town driving to prevent it from going into 4th frequently, where it stays down to 1200 rpm or less on a light throttle, much too low for any throttle response and for the general health of the motor & transmission. Whew, you thought you could just leave it in drive !You can, but at the expense of driveability and longevity (of the trans, not you). The TCU (trans computer) is programmed for early upshifts & late downshifts with gentle driving. I don't put it in D until reaching cruise speed of 55 or 60. 74,000 is amazingly low for a 92. Has the transmission been serviced ? It should be flushed (not just drained & filled) & pan filter screen changed every 30k or so. Also, the car really needs an external transmission cooler installed, especially before summer. If you want to learn all about your Q45, this is the place. Very important: have your chain guides been updated ? If not, search this forum now, your engine is at risk of self destruction. Good luck !
