this is the first time ive owned a manual, and i dont know if this is normal or not. when the car is off, and im not pressing the clutch, i can still move around the shifter easily. do i need a new shifter or is this normal? is this bad for the transmission at all?

well it depends you should be able to move it around all you want even put it in the the slots with the clutch out. You can even put it into gear but it shouldnt be able to go in like nothing you'll feel some resistence before it goes in

so what exactly happens when you move the shifter without pressing the clutch? i thought the clutch disengaged the engine so you coudl change gears. if the clutch is in, shouldnt it be impossible to move the shifter? i dont quite know if its going in gear, but i can move it into the slots pretty easily. anyways, if it is messed up, it would just be the shifter and not the whole transmission or the clutch? i really hope its just the shifter if there is a problem.

i wouldnt worry... im 99.9% sure thats percfectly normal. all standards can move thru the gears when the cars off with out the clutch. shouldnt hurt it at all, im gonna say b/c the trans isnt turning? (please correct me)

but i do it all the time...

u can shift without the clutch too when you're driving... My dad had to do that with an old VW truck when the clutch went out. Just a Pita if you don't know what you're doing.

: That's normal. Nothing is moving so it's fine I would think. I do it all the time. With regards to shifting without the clutch, that's fun. you just gotta know when to nudge it in or else it'll make the most horrible sound ever. Just knwo how to rev match before trying.
