shifter problems!!

my wife got me Short shifter for xmas. and i tried to install it todayhowever that was not possible because it would not fit, the metal ball at the end of the SS is too big to fit in the hole on the plate where the shifter is supposed to go in, if you guys can help me i would really appreciate it. this is a pictute of the same shifter i got zerothread/283931
