So I posted a few days ago about having an issue with my e-brake. Thats all well and good now. Tonight, I was backing out of my friend's driveway. After backing out, I pressed the clutch and put her in neutral. I went over and looked for first... WTF? It was like stirring a pot of mashed potatoes. My dad and I took the center console apart, and pulled the shift boot up. We saw the linkage disassembled. One of the pins or covers (wish I could remember off the top of my head) fell off. I was suggested to by a friend to just buy the whole "assembly" (what was he referring to? shifter assembly? OEM? Aftermarket?) and have it replaced. We got it home with some creativity (using a hoodie string to hold the linkage up and driving home in first gear).

I could use some direction in here. My dad and I would like to work on it tomorrow. Any ideas? Thanks so much in advance. You all have been nothin but help so far.

Sounds like your shifter support bracket broke which is actually pretty common. I would suggest buying it from one of the NICO sponsors, here's a link to it at a non-forum sponsor for illustration purposes:

Thanks for the input, Tim. I'm not entirely sure thats the piece in question, but I could be mistaken. I am looking at the diagram you linked me to, and I believe assembly beneath the bracket. The fork piece connected at the bottom of the shift rod that links over to the transmission (so it appears) and the rod beneath the fork piece. Like I said, I'm unsure. I believe the problem is the rod beneath the fork piece. My mechanic friend said the bearing or pin in the middle that connects the fork / rod fell outpin fell out ad the rod disconnected from the transmission.

Anyone else able to help me diagnose this problem? I'm sure alot of what I was trying to state included bad terminology, but if anyone has any clue or feedback -- I would appreciate it.

If you are referring to the actual linkage with the universal joint in it, then it can be replaced but I believe you have to drop the trans to access it. I've seen people bend the forks back over the universal joint with success.

If you decide to replace it, here's the part that you need:

I'm looking at a different diagram of the whole linkage assembly and it looks like I'm pretty sure I'm now almost positive I'm only missing a pin. Same deal? transmission gonna have to get dropped? We were able to get in through the center console to rig it for the ride home last night. Is the driveshaft gonna have to be dropped if we go in from underneath? Necessary?

Thanks again for all the help, I appreciate. :-)

Quote »Is the driveshaft gonna have to be dropped if we go in from underneath? Necessary?[/quote]to go underneath it is necessary but for you to get a pin back in place, and since you could rig it up, why would you need to drop the whole transmission at all?

sounds like your connection to the control rod is out, or your collar connection is missing.

check out here for the factory specs, I will start you out on the page where linkage starts. just keep clicking the pictures to go to the next diagram, hope this helps you narrow the procedure, its VERY detailed
