I have been looking at a 1990 300zx for sale. today i bought a battery for it (because it has been sitting for 4 months) and test drove it ...kinda. the major problem if the shifter, it moves up and down about 2-3 inches and laterally 2-3 inches and i cant even find 2, 4 or R. Is this just the buching? or maybe the clutch pivot ball? if this is my problem is the car still worth buying and how hard is it to fix?

probably just the bushing, easy fix. A ding in the selling price of course but still an easy fix.

my shifter did about the same thing and it was the bushings. $5 fix but is hard to get to because there is no room for your hand to get to the bolts on the shifter. here is a diagram of the shifter. http://courtesyparts.com/z32/oe_shift.html

take out the center console it's an easy fix, alot easier out of the car for the 60k maint. if your gonna pull the whole unit to diy.

But it is most deff. the bushings, i think spl are making brass onesto fix the crappy rubber ones that wear out.
