Ok I installed a short shifter and had some rattling (common but not this kind) and someone suggested to check my fluid.

Where can I check the level of where the 5-spd sits in, is this transmission fluid I have no idea.

Any help?

Remove the fill plug on the driver's side of the transmission under the car. With the car level the fluid should be level with the fill plug hole. Stick your finger in the hole to check the level.

Thank you thats just what I needed. I heard that the fluid needed is very expensive and the owner's manual does not say WHAT to use.

Hmm..lemme clear that up....use "quality hydraulic brake fluid" (DOT3) for your clutch lines...but in your 5spd transmission, manufacturer recommends 75w-90 GL-4 (atleast on my '95 S14) It's not really too expensive...at autozone, the cheap stuff is like $1.99 a quart and the synthetic like Mobil 1 is like $6.99 a quart. If you don't know what's in it already, just use the cheap stuff for top off.

hope the link works..."Mobil 1 Synthetic Gear Lubricant is suitable for all automotive applications where lubricants meeting API Service GL-5, are recommended. It can also be used in rear axles where an API Service GL-4 lubricant is recommended. It should not be used in any transmissions requiring an engine oil or automatic transmission fluid, or GL-4 performance level."

i guess because it eats away @ the yellow metals or what not... just make sure to use GL-4 gear oil in the transmission.

I know redline makes synthetic gear oil... any others?

Thanks. Yea I have heard of redline but I guess I will just get whatever autozone recommends because just out of simplicity.

I'm under the impression to get amsoil you have to have a dealer connection, atleast for the motor oil you do :) Not that it's a problem for me muhahahahahah :evilhaha :evilhaha

Lucas products are great btw.

How do you take out the filler plug on the transmission??? I just did my cluctch and I know the drain plug is a 1/2 socket wrench, but the filler plug was a full square shaped nut! What tool can you use to take it off????

Simple my friend. just use the rachet by its self. it fits right in. use a shorty extention if u have too also. top it off till it starts to spill out. thats when u know its full.

Yes most filler caps you just use the ratchet itself, really cool that they did that, dunno exact drive.

Rated, use an open wrench on it... soo it'll just grab the 2 sides of da square nut...
