I did a search but didnt find an answer.

Right now ive got a KA24DE stock transmission with 165k miles. I wasnt gonna put any money into it cuz im gettin an SR soon, but im gonna autox it on Sunday and i desperatly need to install new shifter bushings.

I dont have a manual for the car yet. im gonna get the $70 and dont feel like spending $20 for a Haynes to do this one thing.

Questions:1. can the bushings all be done from inside the car2. Need any special tools?3. How much does nissan charge for these4. How many different bushings are required.

This is my first RWD car so im kinda dumb about it.

How do you know you need new shifter bushings? If you just mean the one in the shifter it's really easy, but it won't do anything but tighten up the stick, won't make shifting any smoother or easier.

if ive got the car in 3rd i can move the shifter to where 5th and 1st should be. In other words, i have to like aim the gearshift to get it into gear. I had the same problem in an old subaru i had and replacing the bushings fixed it right up

holy cow, that seems bad if you can go from 3rd to 1st/5th with out going through neutral. figurativly speaking... my friend's '83 datsun pickup kinda does that. it's weird.

maybe i described that wrong. when im in 3rd gear, its got so much slop that (when in 3rd) i can move the shift lever to both left and right extremes

Interesting, I think you can do the bushing from the inside, but I'm not totally sure. I know you can pull the shifter out by removing a small C retaining ring, but there seems to be a much larger bushing down there. If you get this done I'd be interested in it myself

I had the exact same problem in my coupe until last week. It had so much slop in it, that you could literally put it in 3rd gear and then move it over to where 5th should be... it was horrible.

Here is what you need to do to correct it. -Unscrew the shift knob-Remove Trim cover and boot-unscrew the upper dust boot-Remove the lowerd dust boot. You may have to cut a slit in it to get it up over the shifter.-Get a set of Snap Ring Pliars. Usually about 10 bucks from autozone.-Remove the inner C-Clip from the housing and then pull the whole shifter lever out of the transmission.

Look at the very bottom of the shifter. There is a ball like pivot at the end of it that is about 1/2 inch in diameter. This is the part that goes into the shift linkage and allows you to shift gears. Like this.

/ / <---- Threads / | | | | | | ( ) ( ) <--- Pivot Point | 0 <--- End of Shifter Rod

At the end of that, there should be a white plastic collar that will rotate around then end of the ball like so....

This is the peice that is wore out. Just go to your Dealer and order this peice, reinstall and it should be fixed. What happend on mine was that bearing was so wore out that is had become disconnected from the shifter as just just sitting in the transmission. On my last trip to the junkyard I got a new shifter rod with that busing already on it, pulled out my old one, fished out the busted bearing, reinstalled..... shifted like it was brand new, no more slop.

I hope this helps you out, my drawings are kind of crude, so if I find pictures, I will post them to clear it up a bit.

Great thread and response, glad I searched before starting a new thread about the bushings and the major slop in my shifter.

Out of curiosity, does anyone make polyurethane replacement bushings for KA trannys?
