Well Wes... think of it this way, the sum of the parts have to add up to at least the $40,000 price tag for the Q. Plus, we all know that the car manufacturers have always used the secondary parts market to make the "real" money (they're disposable and designed to wear out), so it wouldn't surprise me to find that if you bought every part needed to build the Q, you would actually spend double or triple the $40k. Same with all other manufacturers.
Also, the bezel isn't wood... that gets overlayed later. Just plain old plastic. Probably $3 worth. And you're right-- we don't have many options so they can (and will) charge what they want. Especially since demand for parts for the first gen has to be fading now. Simple demand side economics will keep the prices going up. A buddy of mine is restoring a '53 Corvette and paid $5000 for a head not long ago. But considering there are only a handful of 53 heads in the world... he got lucky to get it at all. On the flip side-- that car will be worth $250K or more when complete (based on a recent Barret-Jackson sale)we can only dream that the Q would be worth 10% of that.
As Hitman said... "It takes a special person to own a first gen Q."
