Ever since I had my Z I noticed the shift were not real easy.I attributed this to the sporty nature of the tranny.

Especially thrid always seemed like it wanted to be finessed to go in.Yesterday I had new trany fluid put in the the tranny shift real easy suddenly.

Kinda weird since the 6 sped had been shifting the same it seemed to me from day one , so I didnt expect any difference.

The dealer put in the OEM xw-85 , which I suppose was in the car from beginning?

hmm, they may have switched to a different fluid as the cars come in to smooth out the shifting, just a throught though.

i would say that it was the new fluid, but if it has been like that the whole time, then that wouldnt be the case.

I dunno, It always semed to be this way.. But I suppose if a change is gradual one can be fooled.

I would be suprosed for the fluid to be worn out so badly after only 11,500 miles to affect shift quality?

Those 11.5k miles were nearly all highway too so very few shifts per mile.

I thought I was doing it a bit as overkill just to getrid of wear particles in tranny when doing this but didnt anticipate to feel an actual difference.

hmm, is there any chance there was not synthetic in it from the factory?

i think i remember somthing about synthetic possibly causing damage to our transmissions because of it being to slippery...here it is:

NISTECH wrote:although a recent class at nissan tech school they suggested not doing it and said if a car was still under factory warrenty,if it was tested to have a synthetic fluid in the trans when a failure occured the claim would be denied. They stated the synthic oil was allowing the syncro to slip on its brakeing suface and not perform as designed.

hope that helps

My tranny never grininded before it was just hard to get into 3rd sometimes a problem that has disappeared now.

The new MT tranny fluid is OEM nissan dealer installed+ selected.

What ever OEM spec is (GL5?) is in there now and musta been before.

i belive oem for your car is 75w-85 gl-4, pay close attention as you put more mileage on it, see if it gets to feeling like it did before the change.

i will grab a bottle of oem m/t fluid from my stash and post up any info i can find on it. this is certainly a mystery. i have heard very little about synthetic fluid being bad for the trans. i have seen on redlines website that they dont reccomend using "rear-end" type gear oil in a tranny because of [incorrect or lack of] friction modifiers. i will certainly research this further.

chris: i think that most of the time, synthecic fluid contains no frictional modifiers and that redline is the exeption, as redline works great with our trannys. if the nissan is synthetic, then im sure it would also be formulated with frictional modifiers.

I thought it was normal and that these tranny are just naturally notchy, 3 rd was always harf to get into almost had to force it a bit , but i had heard these tranny's are notchy so figured that was it.

Never knew it could be such a smooth and direct engagement as it is now.

heya fred, I dont know what year your z is but the 03 z had a problem with grinding into 3rd, I had replaced a few trannies for this. There were so many updates in the trans that rebuilding it was not feasable. and when doing the trans they also had me put in a new clevis on the clutch master rod. It was slightly longer and pushed the master rod in slightly more to give it a better clutch release. I suspect the clutch disc was still dragging on the flywheel. It only seemed to be a problem with 3rd gear though. In the cases I seen they were at the point of grinding when shifting.

Additional note. The OEM fluid is not synthetic and it is GL4 as GL5 is corrosive to the brass syncros.

Scott:Thanks! My Z is production date 6/04 ie its a 2004.5 as some call it.

Do yu think the dealer may have givcen me a free tranny clutch update w/o my knowledge?(This dealership seems real nice)

In any case its weird how much better the car shifts now, especially third.

Fred..

PS: Good to see you around Scott!!
