So, i get in my car today to find out that my shift lock wont release so i cant get my car out of park. I know nothing at all about automatic transmissions, so any help at all would be greatly appreciated. I need to figure this out so i can get to work tomorrow.

Btw, its a 96 240

thanksJosh

I'm not familiar with the s14 auto transmission, but I think most modern auto trannys have various triggers that can cause this. The idea is to keep you from driving until you fix whatever problem it is detecting. I'm not sure if the s14 does this or not, but if it does then the following should at least get you to work:

You should be able to put it in neutral before turning the key. Then just start the engine, put it in drive and go. You'll probably have to repeat that if you should happen to put it in park at any given time.

Again, I don't know enough about auto s14s to be of much help in fixing it.

Thanks a bunch!

Turns out it was the actuator in the center console that pushes the shift lock foward. It was hung up like there was a bunch of nasty, sticky stuff all in it. I got some wd-40 on the arm and its back to normal. And i was worried it was going to be something more of a hassle haha.

automatics still = fail though hehe

omg check your brake light fuse thats what the shift lock unit uses to detect ur pressin on the brakes so it releases the gate if not check some fuses or brake light bulbs. trust me used to wire in brake light kills on new popo cars and if they left the switch that breaks the brake light ciruit on than they had that problem.
