was checking fuses, pulling one at a time, checking, re-placing as I went. Cig lighter was blown, but now I can't shift gears. Popped off shift lock cover, will only change gears (park, drive, neutral, reverse, ect) while pressing spring (or whatever) of shift lock. ???

Quick question first:Are you pressing the brake pedal before you try and move the shift lever?

If you are, the problem is probably either a bad shift lock controller, bad brake switch, or a bad shift lock solenoid.

Before checking those, though, I'd double check all your fuses.

The shift lockout uses the same brake switch as the brake lights, so if your brake lights are coming on you can rule that out as the cause. If the brake switch checks out, that just leaves the solenoid or controller. You can either try and diagnose those yourself using the link below (all you need is a multimeter) or if you're not comfortable doing that, I'd have a dealer take a look at it.

You can find details on the shift lock mechanism HERE. Check page 260 if you have the 4 speed automatic, or page 592 if you have the 5 speed "manumatic".

You probably have a bad brake switch, then.
