Before the flames start. I've done this too many times already for my comfort, I'll be doing some "spirited driving" and I'll be concentrating on the turns too much and forget about my revs, look down and I'm siting at 7500 RPM's which just isn't cool with me. So I want to get a shift light to go off between 6000 and 6400. I'm looking at this one. It's small, black and would go on my steering column perfectly and even blend in (minus the JDM TYTE TYPE R YELLOW end caps):

Now the tricky part.

What do I need to make this work with an SR? May I remind potential posters that the car is distributorless, and uses 4 coilpacks. Are there any other parts I need? And how is it hooked up?Is it just as simple as splicing it into the factory tach signal?

TIA; kthxbye.

PS - I don't want a monster tach, the tach in my cluster works outstanding, thanks.

i thought we had a fuel cut off at like 7200(i'm not sure about that) either way just tr listening to the motor, you should be able to hear when your up that high on the tach

says it can replace a smaller shift light or be hooked up to a rpm trigger. the only way to get a rpm trigger from what i kno is in those oversized rpm guages with the adjustable shift lights. im sure u could somehow make ur own rpm trigger or possibly buy one.

No, I have revved it to 7500 a few times.

I run 7psi, I have a catallytic convertor and a resonator plus the muffler. Needless to say, my car isn't loud. Just listening to the engine isn't enough. If I'm paying attention, sure I can tell where I am in the RPM band, but when I'm concentrating on a line and not flying off a mountain, I don't really think about the sound of the motor relative to it's RPM.

I'm not getting a monster tach. A lot of people run just shift lights. I just need to know what I need to make it work. The shift lights have "pills" that set what RPM the light goes off at. I just need to know where to get the signal from and if there is anything else I need to get it to work.

A lot of guys use the tach/rpm signal wire going to the ecu for their aftermarket tachs so you may want to try that method with your shift light.

But is that raw signal enough? I mean, not all tach signals are the same for every car.

I know someone has done this before. grrr.

sorry buud, i think that particular light is an addon for an autometer tach.. at least thats what makes sense to me..

I know where you are comming from.. i have bounced off the RL several times by pure accident.. especialy when the wheels get spining. The motor doesnt sound very different betwen 6800-7200

Do a search on FA bro. Some of those guys from what i can remember back use to just tap into the tach signals from the ecu to get their aftermarket tach and shiftlight to work.

Like you said though...every car is not the same.

Here, I got this instead. It's tiny, not too bad pricewise, and all one self contained unit. Plus it's easy as cake to install.

That doesn't seem bad at all...I'm not big into electrical stuff, but how would it read what rpm it's running from a cigarette lighter?
