I am a real rookie on trans, i did a searching but got even more confused. I have a 89 240 with a sr20det. The shifter goes into all gears but the shift fork wont move at all we took the trans out and couldnt move it with a tire iron! Do i need a new trans or is there something internal we could fix ourself

Shift fork or clutch fork? The shift forks are internal to the transmission. The clutch fork is that think that partiall sticks out theside and is what pivots to engage/disengage the clutch. Which one are you referring to?

When it was hooked up in the car were you able to move it with the clutch pedal? If it is jammed, you'd have to remove the clutch and pressure plate and take a look. Its not part of the transmission so you wouldn't have to replace that. Its part of the clutch system, located inside the bell housing.

You may have a bad bearing, which is jamming it. Or the pressure plate is what's jammed, but I would think you'd have some play if it were the pressure plate. You probably won't know until you take a look inside. Since you have the trans out of the car already, the rest is easy.

Actually, the clutch, not the pressure plate. I don't see how the pressure plate would get jammed up. But anyway, I'd think it was probably the bearing.

If you remobe the boot around the clutch fork you can probably see inside a little. Something might be noticable. But like I said before, if you already have th trans out you should be able to just remove the clutch.

Sorry, I got a**backwards for some reason. Forget that clutch business. If you have the trans out I don't know why you can't tell whats jamming it.

That tab is part of the release sleeve that the bearing rides on. I haven't worked on a 240sx manual in particular (I have an auto) so I'll defer to someone else if they want to jump in, however, I believe those tabs should rest on either side of the fork. There should be a spring that holds the fork to the tabs. I see the spring in the picture, but I can't quite tell if its out of place. The sleeve itself is definately crooked.

If you can't tell what's wrong after examining it, probably the easiest thing will be to remove the bearing and take everything out. Can you spin the bearing?

your T/O bearing colar is spun on the shift fork. It needs to be straight as droll said. pull that assembly off the trans[ the fork and the bearing assembly realighn every thing and try it again. the bearing assembly should slide freely on the front trans housing snout.

after looking at your pictures again It looks like your shift fork is bent to hell. maybe its just the picture angle not sure.
