Can we do without the shield under the front end around the oilpan. You know, big one. How important is it to have the entire thing? The front protects all the belts and stuff but is it really needed?

In the first gens isn't it better not to have it to help get some needed air? What about a smaller shield or mesh? How does water off the road effect performance if I rip the damn thing off?

I drove about 45,000 miles, with mine missing. It made the engine dirtier, and made changing the oil a lot easier.

I am sure it helps reduce noise, and improve aerodynamics, thus improving gas mileage.

It's only $220, for a new one from Infinti:eek:

about half of the ones I see, in lots, are missing.

I guess I am saying it is a personal thing.

It helps cooling. If you need one, check around at all your local jiffy oil change places. Guess where all the missing ones went missing!

Doesn't do anything? Why would Nissan spend the money! If it cost you $220 it cost them at least $75..........that's more than they spent on the brake master cylinder!

Critical in helping isolate air flow in slow traffic so max amount goes thru radiator instead of around rad.

Probably the same people won't keep the foam surrounds on rad or fan blades in tip top shape. What am I say most don't even change their coolant.

I have an almost brand new one, my 3rd.

Lazy techs don't put in all the screws.

Yeah, I am sure they just had these lying around the factory taking up space and figured putting them on the G50 was the best way to get rid of them! :D

But then the previous thread on this topic did lay out some valid reasons for maintaining this functional item.

Mine's still got it and yes some of the screws are missing. I can see where it protects the engine from undo dirt and grime, but I wasn't aware it helped airflow in slow traffic. I would have figured it to be the opposite. I kind of like keeping the car to factory roll out condition and I've still got the origional hanging on there.

It's such a pain to have to remove it all the time, by that I mean all the time I'm spending with mine to recon the old motor. I was just curious to see what you all thought. I'd like to design something with quick pins or something to cut down on the aggravation. I wonder just how much it helps with the airflow?

There's gotta be a way other than Smilies to invoke voice tone & inflection, but until then, best I can do is to say:

"Your car has no grill."

 :) :( :D ;) :pface :rolleyes

They make good snow sleds!!!! Just kidding . . . the shield keeps the AC, tension pullys and PS and WP all clean. However, it also keeps air that is passing under the car from blocking air that is traveling through the radiaator and exiting under the body. The high end racers (ie. Porsche, the Italian Stalion, etc.) spend considerable design efforts on under body air flow to enhance handling and engine air flow. Don't leave it off of your Q. It was not an after thought or extra part.

Not to beat a dead horse, but go to the Infiniti.com site & buuild a G35.

There's an option for underbody air flow management.
