I actually had some time to work on the car today and she's now purring like a kitten! Turns out my timing was close to 35 degrees retarded, which the EMS was trying to correct with no avail. ...10 minutes with a timing light and a few distrib/software adjustments and this vid is the result (1.6 megs so everyone can see):

http://people.clarkson.edu/~pe...n.WMV

I feel so much better now! I had all these crazy possible problems running through my head, the fact that she now idles nicely is a HUGE releif. She's idling a little high in the vid, but thats just because she was cold for that first startup. I have the EMS set to high idle until the coolant heats up, then it drops down to a silky smooth 700 RPM or so. Note also that this is with an open downpipe that is only about 2 feet long right now, hence the noise.

DYNO HERE I COME! (soon)

Guess our conversation got you off your lazy A$$ huh...lol. I'm still broke. I need a 300ZX maf plug.

Glad your **** is running better bro. Gonna be nice whoooping your A$$ at the track this summer though when I'm driving my DIY creation and you've got the million dollar baby.

If I can make the drive cross country anyway.

Sweet, it's a date then. To quote a line from one of my favorite movies, "I hope you have your wood screws in, cause I'm about to blow your doors completely off"

Thanks man. I wouldn’t say that the AEM is really easy to work on, but its not impossible either. Its something that you really need to do your reading on, get experience with and learn in steps... Definitely not something that you can just pick up and learn how to do. Its a standalone with a TON of capability, but that variety of options also makes it a somewhat complicated thing to learn how to use well. I love it though. Even after my car is built and done, learning this EMS (and my engine!), tweaking this and that will certainly keep me happily busy for a long time.

EDIT: just re reading what I wrote... the menus, graphs, wizards all that that the EMS comes with are VERY nice. I dont mean to sound like the software itself is difficult- AEM did a very good job of making most of the software pretty intuitive... it just takes a long time to know how to use all of its capabilities if you know what I mean. Hooking up the EMS is of course cake, and the startup maps that come with the unit are also pretty nice. My car is running on the startup map now, with some VERY minimal modifications. ...All I had trouble with was synching the timing up and stuff which, honestly, shouldnt have been that big a deal had I read the instructions more carefully when I first got the unit.

Thats the cool thing about the EMS, it may take a bit to learn how to tweak everything, but it TWEAKS everything. If I do ever go AEM, I'll just have Ivan do most of the initial tuning while I over the shoulder him all day. Plus I'd have him do the install and all the rest of the ***** work...while I drink cold Corona.

Does your EMS measure knock and datalog the knock readings for a length of time?

are you on the aem forums? that helped me a bunch. when i had mine there were still a lot of bugs to be worked out (v.7x firmware). thats one reason why i let it go. it's supposed to be much better now.

do you plan on tuning yourself? dyno/street?

Thats exactly what I'm doing, WD. The 2nd or 3rd week in April, two of my good friends and I are making the 14 hour trip to Phat KA-T/Sound Performance Racing to have Ivan and his cronies do the tuning. I plan on talking him into letting me drive one of those supras around also ( ssshhh!).

The EMS does measure knock as well as datalogs it if you want, for as long as your computer has hard drive space to accommodate (basically forever). The datalogging capabilites of the EMS are amazing... I'll post up some graphs from the startup in this vid. You can choose to datalog any (or every) parameter, then later on graph them side by side, overlaid, make calculations etc etc etccccc

I mentioned above in the original post, the idle is high because the engine is cold. It ramps down from 1500 to 700 once everything is warmed up.

haha I will... I wanna wait till some of the sand gets off the roads (it just snowed late last week here), then I gotta take it over to a local shop to get the downpipe and dump tube finished. After that its clear sailing to Ivan and Phat KA-T!

I like the monitor on the seat.

Got a really long extension cord so you can tune your EMS on the road?

If I were you, I will route the oil supply line elsewhere or protect the brake reservoir against chaffing. How do you installed the BTM, mine is waiting for some space to clear up on my engine bay.Nice setup, like the open space between the turbo and the MC.Good quality job!!
