Hi everybody,
recently, my friend handed me a 1981 datsun 720 with the sd22 diesel engine. for free (might i add). Apparently the diesel truck is a rare one. The only problem was that the truck had been sitting for 15 years and was a dust museum. So i finally got to work on it yesterday. And after changing out the oil and a brand new battery, she was kicking over. Didnt want to budge at first, so we removed the air filter, and placed a damped rag with gas at the end. It took about a minute of cranking, but after a while, she was on. She didnt want to stay on at first, but once she was warmed up, she idled. It was beautiful. The smell of diesel is like no other.
So next came the brakes, i knew the clutch was out, so i decided to begin with the brakes. Drums in the back, discs in front. All in good shape. all it needed was some dot 3, and the lines to be bled. afterwards the brakes were on and moving. Perfect.
So we jump on the clutch right away. The actual clutch im sure was in good shape, since it jumped on me while i was turning it on in gear. so i figured the problem was somewhere in the cylinders. sure enough, it was the master cylinder. bad master, full of dirt and oil. luckily, autozone had one in stock and ready to go. only problem was, i couldnt get the male connector, that feeds the oil lines, off the old master, so now im looking for a new one.
There is no doubt that this girl is gonna be up and running very soon. im really excited for her to start running. Im still looking for a KA24 tho for the swap. The sd22 is nice and classic, but i need more power!!
