I recently got A 91 240SX super hicas with a blown head gasket. So when i took it to the machine shop he said it was warped. How much can you shave off the head without having to adjust the timing chain or do anything else. What do you need to do if it is more than that. Thanks ajm

the only thing you will have to worry about is that sometimes cars with shaved heads have trouble passing emissions. Other than that you will be ok.

It all depends on how much they shaved off and what kind of shape the motor and emissions controls are in.

Well i live in South Carolina so emissions are not a problem, the machine said they had to take 30 thousandths of the head. So i'm wondering if i'm going to have to adjust the timing chain or is it going to knock or if will just be ok

you will need to retard your timing slightly, but otherwise it will be fine. The chain will be easily adjusted by the tensioners when you put the head back on.

Whoa, .030 is a lot, isnt' it? The FSM probably allows .010 max or thereabouts. I mean, if it was warped, they won't be taking .030 off the entire thing, just where it's high. But if the head now sits flat on the block, what about the other side...the side with the cams? That face *might* not be flat after they're done. The camshaft is straight and the bearings have roughly .002" clearance. If the head's not straight, the cams won't turn at all when you bolt the bearings down. Before you put the chain back on, drop the pistons down to get some clearance and make sure the camshafts rotate smoothly.

yeah i guess i could do that but, the only place i know charges like 200 for uhh "testing". but i wanted to pay 30 bucks again... Not sure what it got i wasnt there i was at school, and my mom took it. But yeah i hope not, becuase this place is runned by some arab that almost yelling at me becuase i started to connect my propane tank (also does propane refuels) to the hose.. So i hope this guy come's through in 04'...damn i dont remember what the measurement was, i have the reciept somewhere, should say on that..Why exactly was that wierd?he was merely explaining that he Bribes the guy to pass him.

I don't know, perhaps it is the moral aspects of it. My fiancee's father is a smog tech and I don't think I would ask him to do that... I would just make it pass. Then again, who knows, I mean he WOULD do it for me no matter what... I just thought it was kind of weird to be dropped as a solution to a problem... "Oh, don't fix it, just skirt around it for awhile"
