I was washing my car the other day, and I began to notice how absolutely HUGE my radio antenna is. Anyway, I started thinking of ways to get rid of it. My first idea was to get some sort of a shorter antenna. I then realized that the front end will still look funny because one side has the beast and the other side doesn't. So... my brother says "Shave it, do you even use your radio?" I answered "No." because I don't, 99.9999999999999999999% of the time (as in, I have once since I got her in August). I liked this idea, but the idea of a completely non-functional radio didn't sit well, just in case. So, here's my new idea (it's a bit hard to explain without pics, check out my sig and you can sorta see my antenna and the rest of what I'm talking about):

Shave it off, but run the wire up through some already existing hole in the dash up along the passenger-side pillar and attach it to said pillar. (there is a wire or something inside the flimsy sticky-uppy thing, right? - gotta love the technical terminology) I assume I could use the defroster vent or something to run it up there, or maybe there's enough room where the pillar goes through the dash...

Anyway, what do you guys think? How much do you think a body shop would charge to shave it off and make the fender flush, paint, etc?

On another note, I've asked this elsewhere, but I think I'll ask for more opinions/ideas: What would you use to remove your pinstripe? Like... Goo Gone, I assume, but what kind of removal process would you use? TIA

I shaved my antenna as well as some other things. I got an antenna thats sticks up to my window above my rear veiw mirror (like remote start). It works better than the stock one and cost me ~30 bux.

I'm not quite sure what that would look like... do you have a pic? Also, how much did the shaving work itself cost? How difficult was it to wire up the antenna?

I just realized that I've been spelling antenna in it's plural form... time to edit... wow, now I think I qualify as a dork...

****, I hit reset instead of submit, here I go. It should only take about 5 mins to wire up. I got all the shaving done when I got my car painted, I dont recall how much it all cost. It will be quite pricey as you have to weld and get it smooth then paint the whole quarter panel.

As far as the pinstripe use goo gona and a hair dryer. Remember to pull at a very small angle, less than 45 degrees so it all comes off in on piece.

When I had my 200SX, I ran my antenna to the roof and had a Fuba antenna (like the VW's have). I never shaved my stock mounting hole though because it was too much $$.

Better idea:

If the 240 was available with the antenna in the glass (option), buy a new windshield and re-route the antenna lead up to the center of the dash so you can plug it into the windshield leads.

I did this with my '68 GS - Windshield was replaced by insurance, so when they asked me if it had the antenna in it, I just said yes. Voila!

you goober!

if you do shave the antenna, use an antenna booster, it'll help.

I've wanted to shave mine as well, it just runs the smooth lines of the car:(

you could get sneaky and use the rear window defroster coils as an antenna if you had a switch. only bad situation would be if you turn on defrost, you'd blow up your stereo. and i'm talkin fire. :P

I don't really like the sound of "quite pricey," but I think getting rid of this beast would be worth it. I'm pretty sure it's taller than I am (I'm 6'3)... which is sad. I wonder if I can pick up aliens with it? I may re-route it for now (as that should only cost as much as a small length of wire and a few minutes) and just cut it down to the mount-thingy and then wait on the shaving part.

The antenna on my S14 is shaved. I love it. I don't listen to the radio much at all, mostly MP3s. I'm a drummer in a band, so, gotta have MY music, not commercials...lol. Anyway, shave it!!!
