How easy/hard is it to find populated servers?
Not easy:

Took that just seconds ago.
One of the biggest problems with finding FUN servers is something that SHOULD be a huge strength for the game: tons of rules options. Unfortunately no one uses them, and almost every server has the same rules, as you can see in that pic. If you don't like friendly fire (FF) be prepared to never have anyone to play with. Or if you're new, and looking for a low-score-only server, good luck with that too. As with most games with small playerbases, SH has a loyal group of experienced players but not many newbies, and not much wiggle room outside what's popular with the loyalists.
Of course it's a PC game, so you can always host your own server (rent it at a games hosting site if you don't have the means to host on hardware you have at home). But that won't guarantee you'll get players filling it.
Despite all of the above, though, the games you do get going will be a blast. The game has evolved significantly since launch (more weapons, more gamemodes, more maps, in addition to the recently added bots). The way grenades function adds a lot more strategy to their use than the "panic 'nade" strategy encouraged by COD and Halo and the like. And the use of spacesuits is well-devised, too, with the ability to shut down your suit computer to hide from player "radar" at the expense of your GUI/reticle and most of your maneuverability. When you shut down you also lose sound, as that's suit-simulated since you're obviously fighting in a vacuum.
With a little control tweaking (using auxiliary mouse buttons as roll control being the biggest change) I've found moving in the zero-G setting very natural.

I mostly play L4D because survival is awesome! And L4D at its peak I think has 10k players. Plenty of games and different modes going on.
What's your name on Steam? I have L4D2 and HL2, but no BFBC. My steam games:
