Shattered Glass

Discussion of Infiniti's amazing (and underrated) sport-luxury crossovers, the EX35 and EX37. For 2014, the EX series will be renamed QX50, in line with Ininfiit's new naming conventions.

OK. Here is a head scratcher. The other day my wife went to look in the passenger visor cosmetic mirror and found it shattered (glass broken but all the pieces still in). Hardly anyone rides in that seat except her, and she rarely uses the mirror. To my knowledge no one has bumped or hit that visor and there are no marks on it. The car is a 2011 with 43k miles, bought new, and I don't believe it came that way. There was a brutal cold snap here in greater Boston for the week prior to the discovery. I've never had one of those mirrors just break before on any car I have owned. Any thoughts on what might have happened? Any ideas about a fix? I will tell my dealer, but I doubt they will take responsibility and fix it.

There's a joke here, but I'm not gonna go there! :nono:

Most likely just a weak point in the glass that finally failed due to the temperature changes. Considering you're driving a '12, there's no responsibility on the dealership's part. Chalk it up to act-of-god, normal wear and tear. See if you can pick one up from a local salvage yard or ebay and save a few bucks.

I agree here.

I highly doubt that Infiniti uses tempered glass in those mirrors, unlike in the windshield, windows, and other exterior glass.

I'm hoping that your servicing dealership has stellar service and will accept the job as a warranty item. I have a feeling that if the dealer is going to do the fix, they'll end up changing out the entire sun visor assembly on that side.

For an alternative solution, a glass shop may be able to cut you a piece that'll fit in there; but it might not be worth the hassle to pick the sun visor apart and reassemble it. Since it looks like you'll be getting this fixed either way, you can always try this first if: 1)this won't be covered by your dealer; 2) you have the time; and 3) you're both handy and patient.

Please let us know the outcome. Now that you mentioned this, I think I should go check my mirrors too :) .

Maybe if it had occurred on the driver's side..., but I appreciate your restraint.

Most of the times, it is the result of a severe impact (road hazard/kick...etc) or highly unlikely there was a defect/weak point to begin with which was triggered by some severe temperature fluctuations...

For an outside, sideview mirror, perhaps. But this is an interior vanity mirror, inside the sun visor, so no possiblity of road hazard.

There's two possible scenarios.
1. Defect in mirror that weakend it.
2. Mirror installed incorrectly.

To the OP, I would be curious to hear what the dealership has to say, so give us an update when you've had a chance to talk to them.

My extended warranty covered it when the visor mirror (passenger) was broken. Local dealer had to order the whole visor not just the mirror.

Definitely a defect...
A friend of mine is driving a 2014 Q50 Hybrid and has been having all kinds of problems with it
The sensors freeze, steering wheel issues, major software/phone connection problems and to top it off after washing his car in his garage his interior vanity mirror literally fell off
Dealer was reluctant suggesting there must have been an impact and aced checking the screws were not tight to be begin with!
He contacted Nissan Canada wanting to return this lemon especially since he gave back his amazing 2012 FX as he wanted to change and save a bit of gas
He posted on their Facebook page and his car has been at dealership for an undetermined time to check all those problems and in the meantime he is fuming as they gave him a freakin Corolla!!!

So I'm not the only one this has happened to. Good to know. I'll probably go in for an oil change next week and check while it is still under warranty.

Just to update myself....Went to the infinity dealer today for oil and filter and mentioned the broken mirror to the kid taking info as a warranty item. A while later I get my newly washed and vacuumed car back with (presumably) new oil in its veins and a brand new visor with an intact mirror. They never even asked leading questions about whether I might have done something to break it. Had a $10 coupon so the whole thing, with inspections of various components cost me $33. Gotta love it. Course when I asked how much it would cost to replace my 19 inch Turanzas with 43k on them, it was $1500. So instead I ordered Hankook Ventus S1 Noble2's for $834 (installed) via Town Fair Tires website. Does getting the mirror fixed mean I the 7 years of bad luck goes away?

Thanks for the update, and congrats for the great outcome. :bigthumb:

As for the seven years bad luck, just nobody look in the mirror and you'll be home free! :rotflmao
