new versa held for 3 months, only 920miles on it (I left it untouched for nearly one and a half month...)the manual says I should have 1st maintenance for 3000 miles or 3 months. But I checked and that the oil is pretty clean (of course only 920 miles << 3000 miles). Kinda of want to call dealer and ask, but don't want to be tricked into doing it early. What's your guys opinion? Will I risk void warranty if I wait till there is truly 3000 or apprly on my V? That probably takes another 2 months.

I would change it at 3 months even if you don't have 3000 miles.

Wait until you have 3K miles. Otherwise you're just wasting oil.

agreed. 3 months and 3000 miles is your Father's or Grandfather's oil. Modern oils are much longer lasting.

The maintenance schedule book that came with my V had two different service schedules.

A: 3 months or 3750 miles (for abused Versas or anal owners)B: 6 months or 7500 miles (a little too long IMHO)

The oil doesn't need changing at 900 miles, even if it has been in the crankcase for three months. There are new cars sitting on dealership lots that sit there for close to a year and get fewer miles. I have never heard of a dealership changing the oil in all of their un-sold cars sitting on their lots after three or six months.

Oil is very stable. It is sitting in a relatively well sealed engine. The oil is probably a few million years old (if my vague recollection of geology is correct), a few more months ain't going to hurt it any.

Drive your V and change the oil around 4 or 5k miles. If you haven't gone that far in six months, change your oil at six months.

There was an article regarding changing oil nowadays. Something about how we were all lead to believe in the standard of 3 months, but with the economy changing, that number may change. I was like, "WTH lolz"

modern oils are designed to run much longer than that now, but the Jiffy Lubes and Service Shops still want to stick to that interval to get everyone to bring their cars in more often. I sent several samples of used oil into http://www.blackstone-labs.com....html to get comfortable with the longer intervals, thus fact based mileage intervals vs what my Father used to do or the shop recommends. I typically use +-5000 miles for conventional oil and let the oil service indicator guide the synthetic used in our 1995 BMW with 160 k miles. The synthetic easily goes 10k. This issue is often one of just plain old personal preference which is why I decided to get lab results to gauge the oil life.

"Every 5,000 miles or whenever I get bored, whichever comes first", to quote Hank Hill. It's my policy anyway.
