Shaft Play

i know this is probably a dumb question but i was hoping to get a quick answer. I'm selling the turbo from my old gsx and i always hear about "shaft play" and how it affects older turbos and is caused from wear and tear. Anyway. How do i check for shaft play and what would be an acceptable amount for a used turbo? if any is acceptable whatsoever? Thanks. please don't flame me.

from what i hear.... there should be no play in the "shaft" at all. hu hu hu hu i said shaft

im guessing that ronin is gay, and that shaft play is when the shaft can move, spin the turbine and if the shaft moves, thats play right? or is it when my shaft gets some play from ronin's sister. he he he

and call a local wrecker and ask what they would ask for that turbo, then put it on ebay as a t-88.

homie.. he means front to back play, as in lateral play. and i still say it shouldnt have any play whatsoever. wait for a turbo guru to back me up on that though aight?

Wiggle the shaft side to side, not forcefully.

A new or good condition turbo will not move at all.

A worn turbo will have some play in it, once it begins to get shaft play the turbo doesn't have a long time to live before shaft play makes the wheel fight the inducer housing.

ok. i was just making sure. i took the turbo outta my 'ol '94 gsx and i was just looking at it and there isn't any play whatsoever, at least that i can tell. and the thing has 120,000 miles on it.

Except you don't spin the turbo. You just wiggle the shaft.

but if the turbine is spun, the wiggle will be felt in the shaft

Well in essence you could spin the shaft but you won't be able to spin it fast enough to produce visable shaft play in 90% of the cases.

Just wiggle the damn thing, lol.
