Well I just put the brand new turbo in about 2 weeks ago. I have probably only put 15-20miles on the turbo. I have a oil leak so I havent been driving the car untill I fix it. Today I decided to get off my lazy butt and go out and check my oil return line since that is where it is leaking. When I took my air filter off the turbo. I decided to check to see if I had any shaft play and I did. My question is, is this normal for the turbo to have shaft play in such short mileage? What could be causing this? I am not sure but I was also having problems with my bov fluttering. Would compressor surge for 15-20miles cause the shaft play? Am I freaking out for no reason?

Do you have to break in the turbo? If so what is the procedure to do it?

Thanks

How much shaft play are we talking? Turbo bushings dont "seat" as there are no rings and they are not close tolerance. Comp surge isn't going to damage a turbo that quick. If the turbo is smoking or leaking oil out the exhaust, it's most likely a return line issue. If it's eating bushings, then its a oil supply problem.

I've only seen shaft play develop that quickly when the tubo doesn't get enough oil. Assuming of course it was a quality turbo.

BOV flutter is not surge.

Dumb question maybe, do you by chance have a dial indicator? We use them on helo's all the time to measure bearing/bushing play. I don't have one, but I've always had access to one so I didn't need to buy it. Just checking...

Damn, I didn't know you were in/near a military base. Which one? The hobby shop will definitly have one. They use them for run out checks and crank inspections etc. They'll also expakin how it works etc. Anymore then .030 radial play is to much and .020 Axial. These are what I'd want from a new turbo mind you.

Think of a wheel on an axel, grab the wheel and move it up and down, thats radial play. Move it in and out, thats axial play.

For anyone who gives a ****

I wasnt able to check out the hobby shop. I am in Port Hueneme, California. I am a construction worker for the navy. The guys at our hobby shop over here arent very much help. They use to have a two guys that worked their who actually new alot about cars. They fired them because they were hooking people up by not charging the full price when they worked on their cars. Now their are guys who just know the name of tools. Sometimes they dont even know the names the of tools you want. They look at you like your stupid and you have to go back their and get the tool you need yourself.
