Hello! So I have a few questions for anyone who is willing to take the time to read this...I own a 1990 240sx KA24E 5 speed. Thanks for taking the time.

1. Speedometer problem - Before I even start the car, it rests at 110, then as I go anywhere between 55mph and up, it reads around 95. Sometimes (very rare) it clicks back into the right spot, then dies again, either by going back to zero or back to 95. I have replaced the speed sensor on the transmission twice, but that has not helped...I was wondering if there is something actually inside the transmission that would also control this.

2. Start up rattle - When I start the car up cold, there is a grinding noise inside the motor somewhere. When I first bought the car, I pulled off the valve cover to find that one of the timing chain guides was busted to pieces so I replaced that...Didnt fix the problem. Could it be a rattle from the heat shield somewhere along the headers?

3. Grinding Clutch - While I am driving, my transmission makes a weird grinding noise...but when I push the clutch in, it goes away, and I notice it the most between first and third, especially when I down shift.

4. Rear defrost does not work at all, I have no clue as to why the hell that quit working either.

Again thanks for the help.

1. sounds like a bad speed sensor on the transmission.2. get under the hood and locate the rattle. 3. Clutch sounds fine, Likely transmission problem sorry...

Thanks for the defrost tutorial

As for the rest, I have replace the speed sensor twice but it still does the same thing.

I have been under the hood numerous times but cannot pinpoint the rattle, I was just curious if anyone else has had that problem to give me an idea for where to start.

And for the transmission problem, I am guessing it is a bad bearing somewhere near the clutch...but instead of me going out and spending the money on a complete rebuild kit, maybe I could get away with just trying one or two bearings to see if that solves it...without having to tear the whole thing apart...

Any advice as to which bearings to start with would be great help.

Thanks

At least you have some type of speedo....

as for the transmission problem, try the input shaft bearing...

or just put a new trans in it....

When yo replaced the Timing Chain Guides did you also replace the Chain and Tensioner? Sounds like the chain has stereched to the point of being loose and the tensoner can't take up the slack. Time to do a complete Timing Chain Job to include all guides and gears with tensonier.

1 - Bad speedometer.2 - If the noise is at the front of the motor, then there is a timing chain assembly problem.3 - The transmission input shaft bearing is worn.
