ok. I am new to this whole turbo world and i have been trying to do alot of research lately because i am preparing myself to go kat. So far here is what i have listed that i need. I am running a sohc-t in my 89 hatch.

JGS turbo kit3" SR20 Downpipehigh flow cat(testpipe)3" apexi catbackwalbro 255lph fuel pumpSR injectorsApexi SAFC2Innovate wideband LC1z32 MAFEbay FMIC w/pipingGreddy BOV

My question is do i need to get the MSD BTM for timing retard or what else do i need. Im kinda lost in a way. My money limit is around 5K and I still need to get a spoiler of some sort and some decent street tires. Any help would be greatly appreciated...

If I were you I would not even waste the money on a msd btm and wideband, get a enthalpy tune or jwt ecu tune, you will be much much safer going this route and it would cost about the same as the safc, btm and wideband. Dont really see why you need a spoiler either, I would save that money and do some suspension work. Coilovers are a great option but if you want something cheaper and still pretty nice, a set of some koni's or kyb's shocks and different springs are pretty decent and you can find them all day in the classifieds. You have pretty much everything you will need to turbo your car in the list as far as I can tell.

so it would be alot safer to do the ecu tune? How do i go about getting that done. I already have suspension. I have Tokico struts and springs. Not top of the line but they get the job done for now.

Check out the site and if send him an email and let him know your setup and he will get you hooked up with a ecu. How much boost do you plan on running? With a safc only you really cant run very much boost at all safely, maybe 10 psi. With enthalpy or jim wolf ecu you can run pretty much as much boost as you want to as long as your motor can hold it.

im really not sure of how much boost i want to push yet. Like i said i am new to the whole turbo world. Im just trying to figure out the easiest and safest way to do things for my first time around. Im not going to run forged units internally because im only spending 5k like i said. I am going to rebuild though. So would the jwt ecu be the way to go with the setup i have listed?

ask around on here, afc wideband and btm can get it done just fine.whatever 550cc injectors can get the ka to. IMHO if your gonna do it with an afc get the btm, dial in how much retad you want and boost your heart out. If your only gonna do 7 psi or so a simple dizzy retarding will suffice. but as mentioned a rom tune is 'better' Biggest numbers on here or any g/d where with stock block are with an enthalpy.

oil lines. jgs has you covered, IDk if it comes with the kit just thought I'd toss a heads up.... boost gauge.

well a rom tune has infinate abilty, in comparison to an afc. AN afc is great up to whatever the 550cc injectors can do, but a rom tune can co beyond IMO.

IF you are able to rom tune or think you could be able to accomplish this by yourself then its much cheaper.

either way rom tune or afc, make sure timing is in check. with an afc you want the btm. also with a romtune you gonna want a wideband...

Hands down go for the ECU tune. SAFC + MSD BTM works, but is not nearly as safe or easy as a chipped ECU. If you go for the ECU tune you wont have to worry about getting it dyno tuned, you can plug in your ecu and drive.

I hate to say it, but Jason at Emance has been doing a good job lately. Although like two people so far are having some issues with their car saying it 'may' be the new ECU they got from him.I got a daughterboard, and chips from him. And soldered them in myself. Car fired up and ran perfect. But my car also ran flawless before that. It's not like I got the ECU, Injectors, MAF, SAFC and put them all in at the same time. Then if something didn't work, I couldn't narrow it down.

It's up to you man, but that was the best $125 I spent on an ECU tune in my life.Just my $.02

not really! he said you can only run 10psi safely, lol not the case..... yeah a rom tune is better as far as max power and safety, but afc's have been aroubnd for a long time for a reason, they work.

eazye, that was for daughter board chips and tune? thats not too bad... less then an afc

You still did.

With an AFC you still have no timing control. With a BTM you do.

So with an AFC alone you can't turn the boost up that much. You could still retard at the distributer, but someone i know had done that and now they have cracked and broken ringlands.

Yep! I really hate to push his name right now. There are two guys having issues with their cars that have his ECU/Tune. Not saying the ECU is the problem. They may have other problems with their cars since 'everything' was put in all at once. Harder to narrow it down where there are a lot of variables.

But I've had nothing but good luck with my Tune/ECU. Before my Daughterboard/Chips/Tune, I was running an SAFC with 740cc injectors and a Z32 MAF. It ran, surprisingly, and ran pretty good. Ran at 10psi with the dizzy retard as mentioned above. Fully built engine.Got the Daughterboard and Chips, then went to town on soldering it in. Just had to move a jumper on the board as well. Easy stuff.Car runs like a raped ape now. Here's a vid of it at the track after the tune.http://vids.myspace.com/index....63565

Back on track a bit. I think that setup should work well. Either way you go, will work for anything in the 10-12psi range. ECU tune can net you higher/better results though if you want to go bigger/better in the long run.

to emo...

how did I miss , clearly told him with a btm.... just forgot to remention it.also I have a rom tune and blew ringlands(pretty sure) but that was on a rigid cold morning and a stone cold motor, needless to say the tune was fine, but the cast pistons couldnt handle the pressures while cold. I had well over 6000miles on my tune, plan to use the exact same one... If I told you not to jump off a bridge today would it not apply tomorrow?

240boogyman: thats going to bring you cost up a bit, but still might be less than a new afc and btm...

Well i have decided to go with an ECU tune because as I stated i am new to this whole turbo world and i wouldnt have the confidence to tune anything myself. So my next question is do I have to run anything else with the tune? Any kind of wideband or timing retard or anything. Any info would be appreciated because I am going to start ordering all my parts tomorrow. Thanks

I'd get a wideband just to be safe(just in case the company you pick makes a mistake), but with most tunes they have overhead so you dont need anything else(overhead= room for error) making it plugnplay. enthalpy, jwt,or even emance(judged by the few people on here) would be a good choice. As for the dizzy set it to stock before you put the tuned ecu in, then make sure the tps is set correctly save yourself the pita

Umm...I ran 20psi with a SAFCII and the BTM...

They work and work very well. I might also mention that ALOT of people use the safc to fine tune the ecu tune because they are so generic unless it's fine tuned.

The ecu tune does work and work very well. In fact I might go that way myself if I did it all over again. This Emance deal seems pretty sweet.

My main point is this, both idea's are very sound and will get you more whp then you're car will have traction for.

If anyone wants to argue this point anymore please make a new thread so we can all discuss the various options and benefits.

Thx WD
