Is there any certain way to set the timing on a SR20det, other than getting it on TDC and setting the distributor?

one way is the CAS removal and reinstallation detailed on one of the sites (i can't remember which one)

the other way is to take an extra coil pack, take a spark plug wire that's been cut at the distro end. Shove the wire into the coil pack and tape it in place. Now you have a length of wire to attach an inductive timing light. Loosen the CAS and you can rotate it around to move the timing. Do this while the car is running. 15 degrees BTDC is the second mark from the right on the crank pulley

There is also a timing loop on the back of the engine near the firewall that you can attach a timing light to.

not all engines have that. mine doesn't have it, and I have yet to work on one that has it. I've heard that the loop also isn't as precise. Don't know if that's true or not. And there are guys who just hook the clamp around the negative wire off the coil pack

The process I detailed is pulled right out of the FSM as well.
