Setting the timing.. NEED HELP BAD

How do I turn the distributor to the #1. It seems pretty firm when I try to turn it and I dont want to break anything. How can I fix the timing?

What happened was I tried to start the car without the harness in the distributor and it went to the #3 plug now.

How do I fix this.
